Sometimes things just get messy.

No judgment. It happens to the best of us. One minute everything is fine and the next you are standing in the mud wondering how it got to this point.

This little one has no regrets by the way. Zero.

Your books might be telling a similar story. Transactions that went uncategorized, accounts that have not been reconciled in months, a profit and loss statement that raises more questions than it answers.

The good news is messy is fixable. I have been cleaning up books that nobody else wanted to touch for over 20 years. Whatever shape yours are in, I have seen worse.

If you paid a contractor more than $2,000 this year, you will need to send them a 1099 by January 31.

Most business owners find this out in January when they are already scrambling. Do not be that business owner.

Here is what you need to have in place right now. A signed W-9 on file for every contractor you have paid this year. A clear record of every payment made to each one. A plan for who is filing the 1099s and how.

This is bookkeeping work and it is exactly what we track throughout the year so January is not a surprise. If you are behind on any of this, now is the time to get caught up.

Today is World Gratitude Day, and I have a lot to be grateful for.

Twenty plus years into this career, I still love the moment when a client's books finally make sense to them. That feeling, chaos turning into confidence, never gets old, and I am so grateful I get to help create it every single day.

Thank you to every client who has trusted me with their numbers. It means more than you know.

This is Hamish.

Today is Responsible Dog Ownership Day, and Hamish takes it seriously. Regular vet visits. His shots on schedule. A very consistent walk routine, mostly because he insists on it.

Responsible business ownership works the same way. It is not one big effort once a year, it is keeping your books current every single month, not just when tax season is breathing down your neck.

If your bookkeeping could use the same consistency Hamish brings to his walk schedule, link in bio to book a free consultation.

Two important dates are landing on the same day this year.

Quarter 3 estimated tax payments are due, and so are extended S corporation and partnership returns. Different filings, same requirement underneath both of them, current and reconciled books.

Your CPA cannot calculate what you owe or file an accurate return from records that are not caught up. That part is on your bookkeeping, not your CPA.

If your books are not ready for either deadline, now is the time to get them there. Link in bio to book a free consultation.

This is what running a small accounting firm actually looks like some days.

Not always a desk. Not always the office setup you picture. Sometimes it is the couch, my laptop, and a client's books in front of me, because good work does not require a corner office, it requires someone who actually knows what she is doing.

I built MSW Accounting so I could do things this way, focused, present, and genuinely good at the work, without needing all the extra trappings. That is still the whole plan.

Today, we remember and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the loved ones forever impacted, and the courage of the first responders and everyday heroes who stepped forward.

Take a moment today to remember, reflect, and honor.

This is Nova.

Nova has decided that the desk organizer is hers now. The pens, the markers, the carefully organized supplies, all hers. She did not ask. She did not negotiate. She simply moved in and made direct eye contact to let everyone know the matter was settled.

Some business owners handle their finances the same way. No system, no plan, just vibes and the confidence that it will all work out somehow.

It does not always work out.

If your bookkeeping situation looks a little like Nova's desk organizer, I can help with that. Link in bio to book a free consultation.
