🤠 Ever written a SQL query so deeply nested it took you ten minutes just to remember what it was doing?

Common Table Expressions (CTEs) in InterSystems IRIS SQL exist exactly for this reason. Using the WITH clause, you can break complex queries into named, readable steps — and the IRIS optimizer treats the whole thing as a single unified ex*****on plan anyway. So you get clarity without trading away performance.

The article walks through how predicate pushdown works (with actual ex*****on plans to compare), when to use a temporary table instead, and one key limitation worth knowing: IRIS CTEs don't currently support recursion — for hierarchical or iterative logic you'll need self-joins, staging tables, or ObjectScript 😄

🤠 If you're running InterSystems IRIS on AWS and wondering how to lock it down properly, Roy Leonov just published a guide that walks through exactly that.

The architecture covers five layers: perimeter filtering with AWS WAF and CloudFront, network isolation with private VPC subnets and Kubernetes network policies, API security with InterSystems IAM including rate limiting and session management, Web Gateway hardening with Nginx URI whitelisting and security headers, and database-level protection with TLS encryption, non-root ex*****on, and AES-256 encryption at rest.
