World Su***de Prevention Day | September 10 💙

Recovering from a traumatic brain injury is rarely just physical. Beneath the scans, therapies, and milestones we track clinically is a person navigating a profound shift in how their mind and body work together, and that emotional experience is just as real, and just as important, as physical recovery.

It's common and clinically well-documented for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and even suicidal thoughts to surface after a brain injury. It is NOT a personal failing. These are normal, recognized responses to a real injury, not signs of weakness, and most importantly, they are treatable.

Dr. Sarah Cormie brings a distinctive interdisciplinary perspective to the field of traumatic brain injury through her advanced academic training in mental health and extensive clinical experience in the assessment and treatment of mental health disorders. This background provides a deeper understanding of the psychological and behavioral dimensions of neurologic injury and their interaction with cognitive, emotional, and functional recovery.

Staying closely connected with your medical team matters just as much. Mental health symptoms after TBI can be subtle or obvious, and the more open you can be, even about things that feel small or hard to say, the better your provider can support you. Asking for help is not weakness. It's one of the most self-aware things you can do, and it takes strength to address it. It isn't a setback in recovery, it is recovery.

Hundreds of people walking this same road have felt exactly what you're feeling and have found their way through with the right support.

At the end of the day, the brain isn't only math, mechanics, and measurable outcomes, it's connection, identity, and emotional well-being. When that side of healing is neglected, physical recovery often stalls too. Real, lasting recovery treats the whole person: mind, body, and heart together.

If you're having thoughts of su***de or self-harm, support is available right now — call or text 988 (Su***de & Crisis Lifeline) in the U.S.
