Sisters Supporting Sisters - Baton Rouge

Sisters Supporting Sisters has had a positive impact on the parishes of East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, West Feliciana, Iberville and West Baton Rouge, through support, outreach and service. Support activities include newsletters, monthly meetings, participating in activities of The Susan G. Komen Foundation (committees, luncheon and Race For The Cure), Relay for Life, Celebration of Life, and being guest speakers at monthly meetings to share information on the breast cancer developments involving research and treatments. Outreach activities include offering support to women who are diagnosed with breast cancer and are in need of help with coping skills and options. There are members of SSS who are on committees with American Cancer Society, Cancer Services, Susan G. Komen Foundation, Cancer Journey, Encore Plus and Minority Awareness. Oncologists and other means make referrals to the group. Sisters Supporting Sisters lobby legislators concerning state and national breast cancer issues. The Group has representation with the Department of Defense ongoing breast cancer research study and the SPIRIT research project with M.D. Sisters distribute literature on breast health, fitness and nutrition. Service activities include participating in health fairs, and summits. The Organization works very closely with Woman’s Hospital, Mary Bird Perkins Medical Center, LSU Health Sciences and River Region Cancer Screening and Early Detection Center, assisting the uninsured and underinsured with mammograms.
