As people change over time, staying close to our partner requires us to be attentive to them as well as ourselves. Couples counseling allows you to gain a greater understanding of your own needs as well as how to communicate them to your partner and be receptive to your partner’s statements.

January is National Mental Wellness month. Working with a counselor isn't just for dealing with acute life stressors--it can also provide insights into steps that you can take to improve your life. If you've been thinking about getting the mental health support we all need, the time is now.

Grief isn’t depression, although it’s still something that you might benefit from talking to someone about. But when grief lasts for several months and is accompanied by physical distress such as sleep or appetite disturbances, it may be playing into depression and be something a mental health professional can help with.

Happy New Year from Victoria Lynn Dorsey!

Symptoms of anxiety include difficulty concentrating and unexplained pains. If you are experiencing these symptoms and haven't been able to get a good explanation for them, it may be time to talk to a mental health professional.

When we are confident in ourselves, we feel less anxiety over our relationship with our partner. This is the condition under which relationships truly flourish, as both partners are able to appreciate their own and their partner's needs.

Victoria Lynn Dorsey wishes all our friends a very happy holiday season!

Part of self-care for depression includes maintaining a routine that allows you to do meaningful work or activities. Even things that aren’t glamorous can still raise your mood.

A healthy relationship is one in which the partners are willing to be honest with each other. For that to happen, they have to learn to be less fearful of conversations that could be uncomfortable, while also being supportive of each other's needs.

Part of treatment for anxiety includes learning not to see problems as bigger than they are. That doesn't mean pretending problems aren't real, it just means challenging leaps in logic about what they mean.

Couples therapy is something people go to when they have high expectations and want happiness for themselves and their partner. Although people have the option of withdrawing from each other, we can help you to support each other instead.

Some of the lesser-known symptoms of depression include irritability and sleep disruptions. If you haven’t seen a mental health professional about them, you may be surprised by how much we can help.

We can be comfortable with people just because they're familiar and not objectionable. But for a deeply loving relationship to flourish, we have to learn to be authentic and vulnerable, which is often where the work comes in.

Anxiety is fatiguing, but it also frequently prevents people from falling or staying asleep. Professional anxiety treatments significantly improve people's quality of life, and not just by preventing particularly bad episodes.

It takes a lot of work to maintain a relationship, but not everything that requires a lot of effort is productive. Seeing a professional relationship counselor will help you stay on track to fix problems and remain healthy going forward.

We are thankful for your support and the opportunity to serve you. Happy Thanksgiving from Victoria Lynn Dorsey!

Therapy is about helping you to progress toward goals that you pick for yourself. Even if progress isn't immediate, keeping your goals in mind will help you stay motivated.

In order for our partners to support us, we have to be willing to be open with them. This can be hard if we’ve learned to expect that we won’t be supported, but challenging this assumption is necessary for people to grow closer.

No two people respond to things in exactly the same way, but there are some things that make people more vulnerable to depression. Not all of them are within our control, but some are, and others are things we can learn to cope with.

Avoiding anxiety in the short term causes it to increase in the long term. In order to truly stop it from controlling our lives, we have to face the things that make us anxious.

Today, we take a moment to honor the brave men and women who have served our country in the armed forces. Veterans Day is a time to reflect on their sacrifices and express our gratitude for their service. Let us take a moment to remember and express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have selflessly served this great Nation.

Instead of somebody who makes you feel stifled, your partner should be somebody you can disclose your true self to. But it may take counseling for you to feel secure enough in your relationship to do that.

Symptoms of depression include not only sadness, but feelings of helplessness and difficulty making decisions. If this sounds like something you’ve been struggling with, give us a call, and we can help you.

We all bring baggage from our past relationships into our current ones, and it can be especially hard to let go of things that we learned because they made us feel safe. One of the benefits of relationship counseling is that it helps us to identify areas where we feel vulnerable and ask for what we need to feel secure.

Wishing everyone a happy Halloween, from Victoria Lynn Dorsey!

It feels safe to avoid risk, but doing this closes us off from potential good outcomes. If you're trying to let anxiety have less of a hold on you, it's helpful to get in the habit of asking yourself how risk-taking might have benefits.

It's not always easy to hear your partner object to something you've done, especially since people aren't always at their best when they're upset. But counselors can help you to keep these conversations productive and work on problems without feeling defensive.

During treatment for anxiety, things that are helpful in the long term don't always help you avoid anxiety in the moment. This is because overcoming anxiety ultimately requires us to become more familiar with the things that stress us.

It's important to acknowledge when emotions are heated and to not shame yourself for them, but that's not a state in which you'll be able to communicate collaboratively, and neither will your partner. It's often better to table a disagreement until you're both ready to discuss it.
