Curtis arrived at the shelter when his family had to move suddenly. He’s a playful, cuddly, shy and talkative boy that is really unhappy at the shelter. It’s been a hard transition for him from home to shelter, so we are hoping to get him into a new home ASAP!

He’s a handsome tiger that loves to play with toys. Curtis would probably prefer to be an only fur-child. He loves people, though, and would provide lots of entertainment and affection to a lucky adopter! He's available for foster or adoption now.

These mega-cuties are all living in crates in our conference room. If you can't adopt ( or foster (, please consider donating enrichment items from our wishlist!

And as always, please share to get these adorable pups in front of as many people as possible!

Are you a Christmas fanatic, already counting down the days til December? Extend your holiday season by adopting Eggnog!

This sweet young lady is dog-friendly and available for foster or adoption.

"We are looking for a permanent home for a sweet pup, Birdie. We took her in from some friends whose schedules quickly changed and weren’t able to provide her the attention they felt she deserved.
You (and everyone else) will fall in love with Birdie and she deserves the best home possible. If we didn't already have a kitty, and if it was working out between them, there's no way we'd be rehoming her. She is the best."

To learn more about Birdie, check out her profile and reach out to her owners from there!

We had quite the cool reclaim this past week! Check out this falcon and her story.

“Hello neighbors, we came home this evening and found that a hawk had been in my pool. She had gotten herself out and was drying his feathers on the pool deck. I called 311. They sent Officer Figueroa out, arriving almost immediately. She was able to get him, and he's been taken for now to the emergency vet over by Ben White. He appears fine, but just to ensure she didn't have any injuries. The bird is banded and the owner will retrieve it by contacting AAC. What a magnificent animal. Hats off to Mrs. Figureoa. Incredible job assisting this bird.”

And what turns out….the owner was at a location that he visits frequently to let her fly tethered. He sent her flying and running to the spot he used to call her back for a treat. She swooped and realized her treat wasn't there yet and when she was flying back up, he realized her tether was no longer attached. It was at this point she flew off. He believes that it was either the carabiner or the swivel that failed allowing her to fly off. He told us when he came to reclaim, he had spent the entire next day out looking for her with no luck. It wasn't until it started to get dark that he posted on the lost and found page.

And then it all came together from the 311 call and social media. The falcon is now home! Thank you to all who helped in her journey back home♥️

It is Birds are the closest-related animals to dinosaurs. Whether you have a cardinal in your backyard, or a red-tailed hawk in a greenbelt, birds are important for the health of our environment. Birds pollinate plants, disperse seeds, control insect and rodent populations, fertilize land, and create many nests, tree holes, and burrows that are used by other animals.

Here are some ways you can protect the birds we have in Austin:
o Put up window decals to prevent birds flying into your windows
o Keeps cats indoors: outside cats are responsible for more than two-thirds of birds being killed
o Add more native plants to your yard: native plants will attract more birds by providing shelter and nesting areas
o Avoid pesticides: pesticides can harm a bird by direct contact, eating contaminated seeds or rodents, and reducing insect populations

📷️All these images were at Boggy Creek Greenbelt trail 2023 and the images are used for UWIN to monitor activity of coyotes and wildlife in areas around Austin.

Do you have favorite bird?

Just a couple of space guys squishing together to make everything at the shelter feel better. Jupiter (A895090) is Pluto’s (A895089) gravitational pull.
They were abandoned in an apartment and there is nothing they would love more in this galaxy, than a loving home together.

🌌Come meet them in our cat building, room H2🌌 Their adoption fees are currently waived....out of this world!

3 dogs, 2 stories, 1 post.... that are similar in sadness (no fault of their own) on why they are back here at the shelter. Let's find them the happiness they deserve in warm foster or forever homes.

First up, meet Leonard🖤 Before 2020, Leonard faced several transitions in and out of the shelter until finding a happy home through a loving adoption. Now, at 13 years young, Leonard is back at the shelter due to unforeseen circumstances. His devoted owner, facing a medical emergency, can no longer provide Leonard's care. Both Leonard and his owner are going through a challenging time. Leonard hopes to find solace in a tranquil, pet-free home where he can enjoy love and treats, which are at the top of his wishlist. And that is all his owner wants for him too!

Also, meet lovely Maddie, 10 years young, and PJ, only 3 years old, a dynamic duo that is just precious together, they keep each other company despite they are back at the shelter due to the passing of their human. These delightful friends have captivated everyone they've encountered, both are house-trained, great car riders, walk easily on a leash with harnesses, and radiate charming personalities. We hope to see Maddie & PJ back in a loving home, experiencing the attention and lifestyle they deserve and were accustomed to.

✨️It is always hard to see when pets come back to the shelter when they were in loving homes before illness or death. It is definitely an uncertain and scary time for them. But AAC does our best to put them at ease. These dogs crave that home life again. And especially with their senior bones that deserve a soft place to land for the rest of their golden years….and give kiddo PJ his best years ahead.

Leonard and the duo, Maddie & PJ all have a wide fan base of volunteer advocacy groups ready to help with supplies, support, and anything needed including Classic Canines &
Orange Dot Crew
Please reach out, and come visit the shelter if you can help any of our shelter friends in need.

🖤Leonard (A632791)

We are starting 2024 feeling extremely grateful for our friends Tomlinson's Feed ♥️They donated over 24,000 pounds of dog food. This thoughtful contribution will be distributed through our Pet Resource Center and Community Outreach Team, reaching out to fellow members of Austin/Travis County who may require additional support for their pup companions. Thank you, Tomlinson's, for being a source of kindness and making a meaningful impact on the lives of our community's pets and their owners.

And then the cherry on top of this HUGE donation, Tomlinson’s Warehouse Manager, took Celine (A891071) home to foster! Celine is a Belgian Malinois, which means she is a smarty pants and a high-energy needs an adopter to match that! Celine has settled in well in her foster home but is still looking for her forever home. If you would like to learn more about Celine, her pet profile link is in the comments!

9-year-old Gilbert (A679959) was adopted from AAC when he was a kitten, but he was brought back in July after his owner passed away. He did not do well in the shelter environment, so we moved him into a foster home.

Although he is very shy, Gilbert is equally gentle. His foster family has been patient with him, and he has opened up and become more comfortable. He enjoys chin scratches and being petted, and will snuggle next to you to keep the affection going.

Gilbert loves treats and comes running when he hears the bag.

Gilbert will be happiest being adopted into a quiet home with humans who will give him the time he needs to acclimate. The reward will be a gentle, super-sweet companion.

💜Desperate Housecats is a program created and ran by volunteers/fosters to help specific cats find their forever homes. DHCs are cats that are often overlooked in the shelter due to age, shyness, or medical reasons.

Our Paws and People Food Drive is still underway until January 7. We are collecting items for the Central Texas Food Bank and pet donations for our AAC Outreach Team to distribute to the members of our Community who could use additional pet supplies🫶

If you are planning a trip to AAC this week, will you consider bringing in a donation to make someone's (or their pet's) 2024 a little merrier?

Donations can be dropped off in our lobby from 11am-7pm, daily until January 7.

"It's been almost 2 years since we adopted our kitties and we are so in love. I wanted to share that our cats were finalists in a photo competition for Catster Magazine!
When we first saw Sox and Coco Puff, they were tiny kittens wrestling fiercely in their kennel. They still have boundless playful energy but are the sweetest, silliest, most cuddley addition to our family. We are so thankful for all the hardworking and kind people at Austin Animal Center!"

We love this update so much! Thank you for adopting!

Adoption Update! ✨️
"It has been almost a month since we adopted Sherlock. We changed his name to Rocky since he is a pure-muscle dog. He has been nothing but a sweet snuggle bear who wants your attention 24/7 and wants to be next to you all the time. He is great with other dogs and kids. We are very proud of him. He is helping us cope with grief after we lost our 7-year-old rescued pit due to cancer. Love this little snuggle."

♥️Thank you so much for adopting and changing this shelter dog's life! Happy Tails Rocky!!!!!!!

This is Bunni (A878342). And we are hoping by sharing more about her, someone will be touched and want to help a dog in need. Bunni’s original owner passed away and before she was immediately brought to the shelter, a family took her in. Unfortunately, there were already 3 dogs and cats living in that home, and adding Bunni to the crew did not work out. Bunni was brought to the shelter. Can you imagine losing your human, then trying to join a new family, and then being brought to a noisy strange kennel to live?

That was 262 days ago when she was brought to the shelter🖤 You can still see the worry and search for her human in her eyes. It’s time we give Bunni that next chance at real life.

Here are our asks for her:
💕The biggest thing for her is we think she will need a low-traffic home to decompress
💕No kids or cats at this time, please
💕She is dog selective and needs a meet & greet to ensure a good fit, but we think a doggy sibling might help her gain confidence in a home
💕An experienced dog owner/foster, who will understand the needs and phases of decompression

Bunni did recently get to go on a sleepover at an Airbnb with volunteers (thank you from Friends of Austin Animal Center ) & here is what they said:
🐰SUPER cuddly. When she wasn’t doing puzzle toys or playing with stuffies, she was cuddled, sleeping on the couch
🐰She is housetrained! Girlfriend happily walked over to the door every time she had to potty to let us know!
🐰Very exploratory in the backyard
🐰Slept through the night without any issues! Bunni slept between my legs the whole time and snuggled up next to me in the morning for more cuddles
🐰Bunni did get a little nervous at times in the Airbnb when she would hear certain house noises or when she would hear dogs barking outside. She settled well with calm cuddles and sniffing on her snuffle mat

When you take a stressed-out dog away from the shelter, they become these magical little creatures🦄 We would love for Bunni to find a quiet, chill foster or adoptive home….Are you ready to change a dog’s life that needs it most? Bunni is ready!

If you’d like to meet Bunni, please reach out to us at [email protected] ( Orange Dot Crew ). Her volunteer besties would love to introduce her to you.

Meet 3 new Cactus Cat dudes! 🌵🌵🌵
Left to right: Theodore (darker tabby stripes), Alvin (warmer brown color), and Simon (lighter tabby) and guess what?! Alvin has been adopted and just awaiting neuter surgery!

After growing up in smaller medical kennels for the past couple of months....Alvin, Simon, and Theodore are finally free in a Cactus Cat group room! While working with our volunteer Jessica, they have been great clicker training students, and Simon is a high fiver.

🤎🤎Theodore and Simon can be found in the cat building, room H45.

It is kind of an unhappy Thursday rather than a happy Thursday post. This morning we do not have even 1 available kennel for space for dogs. We are negative -40 kennels.

⚫️Medium and large dogs in our care: 329
⚫️Small dogs: 79
⚫️Cats: 168

This is Lily Pad (A895010) she is a 5-year-old, Bulldog, that has sadly been a mama many times in her past. She is now living in a pop-up crate.

The plea will not stop until we have the appropriate space to house these dogs comfortably & safely. ‼️We need adopters and fosters‼️

We also need current dog owners to please make sure their pet's microchip is up to date. We don't want your pet to end up at the shelter and not be able to get ahold of you.

We are open until 7pm today (getting here by 6pm is ideal if we are busy). Adoption fees are waived. Please spread the word that Austin Animal Center needs to get dogs out of the shelter.

Look into Jack Gordo's eyes (ID: A888757) and promise him that when it comes to adding a new furry family member, you will SHOP AT SHELTERS! And luckily when you come to AAC to adopt, adoption fees are currently waived!

🌟He has been at the shelter for 117 days🖤
🌟Excellent leash manners

🌟Also, clearly a good listener & sitter

12 year old Snowball A876670 has been through a lot, and now he’s ready for his new forever home!

Snowball's only owner passed away, and because he stopped eating after this happened (they were very bonded). He found himself at AAC. He was terrified in the shelter, so we moved him into a foster home for supportive care.

After several weeks, Snowball made a complete recovery, and gained back the weight he had lost. He’s very shy with new people, and will need time with a patient adopter to adjust to a quiet home. He is respectful of other cats but may prefer to be the only pet.

Snowball is extremely sweet, and loves to be brushed (he’ll walk up to you when he sees the brush). He enjoys being petted, and once he feels comfortable with his surroundings, we believe he’s going to be a very loving companion.

Snowball has been in the shelter system since March 2023! He would LOVE to have a New home in the New Year!
