Izzy A900050 is 13 years old, but acts like a much younger cat. She's playful and loves to patrol the house or chase after hair ties. Her favorite things include bed time, windows, and laser pointers. Her dislikes include lightning and other cats.

Izzy has lived with both large and small dogs, and gets along well with all of them. She is an angelic kitty who feels like a soft cloud. In foster, she's low maintenance, friendly, affectionate, and chatty.

Izzy does no wrong, she has perfect litter box manners, only scratches her designated scratchers, ignores the curtains and house plants, and is generally content to hang out with her humans. She's cuddly and loves to sleep curled up with her humans at night. She's also a great host, and enjoys greeting and entertaining guests.

At 13 years old, Leonard is the oldest dog by far on our urgent placement list. He's a sweet and spicy guy who has had too many shelter stays in his past and deserves to live out the rest of his life in a home.

A little about Leonard:
- He's easily in tune with his person (we want you to come meet him a couple times in the shelter before going home so he sees you as his person)
- He's a great housemate, extremely potty-trained, easy to please, doesn't destroy things (except his own toys), and appreciates all comforts given to him
- He's kind of a low fuss guy; he doesn't demand petting, he'll tell you when he wants something

What Leonard needs in a home:
- No other pets
- Fenced yard or walks in a quiet area
- One-level living or small amount of stairs
- Older kids or adults only

Leonard has a few medical needs that will be assessed and supported by Classic Canines, a senior dog advocacy organization. Leonard is also supported by his volunteer friends in the Orange Dot Crew.

Huge thanks and paws in the air to Girl Scout Troop 691! They made cat mats, straw toys, and sock warmers for our pets, and they dropped off monetary donations as well. They were a great group and we loved our time with them!

"Shiloh (Now named Teddy) had a pretty rough time the first 2 weeks. He developed a terrible cough the day after I brought him home. The vet at Leander Veterinary clinic saw Teddy right away, got him on some medications, with a lot of rest & cuddles he improved. Once he felt better his personality began to show. He is so smart, playful, loves to watch the birds & squirrels in the backyard, loves his daily walks and trips to the dog park. Teddy is living his best life! We were meant for each other. I am so grateful he was able to stay at Austin Animal Center until we were brought together."

What's at the end of the rainbow? Why, a delicious Custard of course!

11-month-old Custard recently participated in a community fashion show and then got to spend the night at a volunteer's home. They said she was laidback, polite, inquisitive, friendly, and checks in often with her handler.

Custard has been great with other dogs here at the shelter and would probably love to have a doggy sibling or two!

Introducing new , Baby!

Baby A901251 was a community cat whose area become unsafe for her and her feline friends. She is adjusting slowly but surely to indoor living and the kindness of strangers. Baby has joined the Cactus Cat group where she can learn to trust people through clicker training. As a community cat, she was friendly with her caregiver so we are hoping that she can build a strong relationship with her new person once she gets to know them.

Baby will need a patient adopter willing to give her time to acclimate to a new setting and set her up for success with slow and steady positive interactions. We look forward to seeing her growth!

We've had 3 medium/large dog adoptions this week. Just 3.

Even though intake is severely restricted, we've still taken in 30 medium/large dogs since Monday.

Yesterday and today we sent 24 medium/large dogs to boarding facilities in a last ditch effort to help with space. We desperately need to get medium/large dogs into foster or adoptive homes.

Pictured are some of the dogs on our urgent placement list. To view the dogs who are highest priority and potentially at risk of euthanasia, visit www.austintexas.gov/page/urgent-placement

However, getting any medium/large dog out will help the dogs on this list! View available animals here: bit.ly/aacavailable

Did you know you could donate your reusable shopping bags to Austin Animal Center?

As of this morning, AAC has 468 animals living in foster homes. Often, these animals need to go home with some basic supplies – nutritious food for kittens, chew toys for puppies, and specialized supplies for our animals with medical concerns. When possible, our foster coordinators like to send these items home in a durable bag.

If you have some sturdy plastic shopping bags, or fabric/canvas totes you are no longer using, we would love if you brought them to the red donation bin in our main lobby!

No extra bags laying around the house? You could also donate some (and the fun things we fill them with) by making a purchase from our foster program Amazon Wishlist: bit.ly/aacfosterwishlist

12-year-old Peachy A898528 is a sweetheart! Change is hard for Peachy, and he’s not a fan of other cats. He's living in a foster home, and he has slowly come to trust his foster mom. However, there are other cats in the home, so Peachy is still feeling a bit on edge.

We’d love to see Peachy move into a cat-experienced household (either through adoption or foster) where he can be the only pet and get all the attention he wants and deserves (he really likes being petted). He's a huge fan of treats and has an unusual meow like a pigeon cooing.

To take over fostering Peachy, please email [email protected].

A volunteer recently took Costner on a group hike to McKinney Falls and shared this recap: "Costner greeted me with little kisses and wags as I entered his kennel. He hopped right into the car and mostly enjoyed the view from the backseat, sniffing at the breeze when we had the windows down, and nuzzling forward for grateful scritches. We walked by other dogs easily and Costner offered very polite greetings to each person that he met. It was truly heartwarming how thankful he was for the outing."

Costner is just two years old but you can see his gentle old soul as you stare into his eyes. He's also one of our most house-trained dogs at the shelter, which is a really admirable feat when dogs only get out once per day! Costner sits as politely as he can when people pass by his kennel, hoping to be chosen. He has been enduring concrete kennel life for ten months now, making him one of our top long-stay dogs on campus.

If you have space in your home and heart, and want to make THE difference in a long-stay shelter dog’s trajectory... Costner would love the chance to decompress in a home and show the world that he’s truly the best boy.

"Please ma'am, may I have some more attention?"

Butterscotch A901360 is currently being treated for ringworm, but don't let that discourage you from seeing his true potential! Ringworm might sound scary, but it's a common fungal infection that's easily treatable. Butterscotch is already receiving the best care possible and hopefully will be cleared next week!

This sweet boy is temporarily sporting a few bald spots, but each day brings him closer to a full, fluffy coat. Butterscotch is a playful, loving kitty who adores snuggles and is patiently waiting for someone to look past his temporary blemishes and see the perfect companion inside.

Meet Super Nova! Besides being super cute and super sweet, she's also super stressed. 😒

As you can see, she has wounds on her face from pressing against the kennel bars and she's also lost weight since her intake in February.

Her volunteer friends describe her as affectionate, easy to walk, and overall just a precious girl. She can be a little scared of new things, so a home on the quiet side would help build up her confidence.

Super Nova came in with another dog and has been paired previously at the shelter; living with another dog is a possibility but she may also really just enjoy alone time to decompress and get some love from humans.

Can you help us find a foster or adopter for Super Nova?

If interested in fostering, please email [email protected]. If interested in adopting, come on in to the shelter!

Here's a smile from Mazda A902059 to brighten your Monday morning!

Mazda is relatively new to us, but she came in with another dog and got this note from a volunteer: "Mazda is so sweet and adorable! We mostly hung out in the play yard and she really enjoyed running around the yard and smelling all the dogs. It was kind of hard to get some photos of her because she's always moving, but she eventually came over for some cuddles and kisses! I can't wait to get to know her more!"

Michael is one of the dogs on our urgent placement list, meaning we’d really like to find him a foster or adopter soon.

It doesn’t seem like Michael experienced a lot of life beyond his family’s apartment before being surrendered to the shelter. He’d never been walked on a leash and pottied indoors, so you can imagine how scary it was for him to land at a noisy, busy shelter full of strangers and strange dogs.

Luckily he has some awesome volunteers in his corner! Here’s what one of them said recently:

β€œMichael has come so far! It made me so happy to see him feeling more confident today. He loves attention from his people when he feels safe with you. He's not big on smothering cuddles but he likes gentle pets and treats and he would place his paw on me to ask for more. He's actually incredibly smart too! I think he has potential to learn lots of tricks. Today was the first time I have seen him feeling perky and playful. He play bow-ed at me in the RLR so we went to the PY and he played with toys there.”

Michael previously lived with 2 chihuahuas and he’s tested well in playgroup here at the shelter. He is available for foster or adoption.

Senior cat Bear has affectionately been deemed a Grumpy Old Man and we believe it - his face gives fantastic "Get off my lawn!" vibes!

Bear is often sweet and social, especially if you have treats. But as a reformed community cat, he has a clear comfort zone and likes what he likes.

If you appreciate a cat who knows just who he is and isn't apologetic for it, Bear A901146 may just be your guy!
