Low Vision Nature Exploration Walk at High Cliff State Park
It looked like we might get rained out once again on Wednesday, June 24, during our Low Vision Nature Exploration Walk at High Cliff State Park in Sherwood, Wisconsin. Fortunately, just as the first participants arrived at the Butterfly Pond Trail parking lot, the clouds parted and the sun broke through.
It was a pleasure sharing the beauty of this special trail with everyone who attended. The birds certainly did not disappoint! Using the Merlin Bird ID app on our phones, we identified and heard the songs of more than 20 different bird species along the way.
Participants explored nature using all of their senses. Some adventurous individuals sampled a few familiar edible plants, enjoyed the fragrance of early summer wildflowers, and experienced the varied textures of leaves, stems, bark, and other natural objects by touch.
I had expected we might only travel a short distance on the trail, and that proved to be more than enough. We discovered an incredible variety of birds, plants, insects, and other signs of nature without having to venture far. Sometimes the richest experiences are found by slowing down and taking time to notice the world around us.
I was delighted to welcome both familiar faces and new friends from the low vision support group. Your enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to experience nature through all of your senses made the morning especially rewarding.

White Canes Can Be Useful to Anyone with Vision Loss - Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually Impaired There remains a myth, even among people with vision loss, that white canes are only for people who are completely blind.

The fall partisan primary election is just a little over a month away on August 11! Now is the time to make you voting plan. If you plan to vote absentee in either the primary or general election, request your ballot right away to ensure that there is sufficient time for it to be mailed to you and for you to return it in time to be counted.

If you are a nondriver, make sure to figure out your transportation plan early and have a backup in case your original plan falls through. You will need a photo ID to vote, such as a driver’s license, state-issued ID card or passport. You also must be registered to vote in Wisconsin. State law allows voters to register on Election Day, but we recommend that you register as soon as possible rather than wait. To register either on Election Day, by mail before Election Day, online, or in-person at your clerk’s office, you must present both a photo ID and a proof of residency. Proof of residency can include things like a utility bill or a residential lease.
