Cool-season grasses like the Kentucky bluegrass and fescue commonly used here in Wisconsin can go dormant when conditions get hot and dry. That doesn't necessarily mean the grass is dead. The important thing is to avoid making things worse:

• Avoid heavy fertilizing during extreme heat
• Water deeply when needed
• Try to keep foot traffic off severely stressed areas

A few things to keep an eye on:

• Shrubs with drooping or curling leaves
• Flowering plants wilting during the day

And remember: watering deeply is generally much better than giving plants a quick sprinkle every day.
