Truth to the powers that be🤣

24/11/2023

In the springtime of my thirtieth year, I penned reflections that now seem like distant echoes from a different lifetime. Back then, the weight of turning 30 led me through a labyrinth of thoughts, pondering the dance between youth and the impending specter of mortality. The years unfolded in unexpected ways – from my roots as a consulting biochemist to navigating the tides of the Oil and Gas industry, and eventually finding my place in the skies.

The journey took me from the tumultuous world of Greek insurrections to the serene skies above Gulu, Northern Uganda. I rode the currents of ambition, much like Alexander the Great, whose conquests by the age of 32 echoed in my musings. Yet, life's script unfolded uniquely for me, weaving through HSE advocacy, military aviation, fatherhood, and the uncharted territories of a pandemic.

As the pages turned, so did my roles – from guiding transport logistics in the Oil and Gas sector to orchestrating the skies as an air traffic controller. Amid the chaos of global events, the birth of Hezron Atwine T and Melania Elsie Atwine T brought joy and hope, anchoring me in the dual role of father and professional.

In the reflective hum of 2022, stationed at Gulu Airport, my vision expanded beyond the control tower. A region scarred by war and insurgency became my canvas for change, envisioning a future where education and dignity prevail. The students of Gulu High School glimpsed this vision during a visit to the control tower, as I shared the secrets of the skies with potential aviators.

On this 24th of November, 2023, my birthday unfolds against the backdrop of Gulu's skies. The memoir encapsulates a metamorphosis – from the uncertainties of turning 30 to the seasoned aviator guiding not only aircraft but also the aspirations of the next generation. "Together Safe Skies," the motto echoes in both my professional realm and the altruistic dreams for the community I call home.

This story is about me and a friend of mine:

Once upon a time, in the year 2008, a passionate and dedicated High school vacist named Eliots.T, embarked on a teaching journey to Ryeru Schools in the western countryside of Uganda. With a deep knowledge of science and a heart full of compassion, Eliots began teaching Biology and Chemistry to young boys and girls, separately, in a uniquely rigorous and semi-autonomous routine.

Eliots' commitment to education went beyond the classroom walls. He organized both theoretical and practical sessions for two campuses, ensuring that both boys and girls had equal opportunities to learn and grow. Every weekend, he would transport the boys from their campus to the girls' campus, conducting demonstrations and practical sessions that ignited curiosity and inspired young minds.

At Ryeru Girls School, Eliots discovered a student who would leave an indelible mark on his heart and the world. Her name was Asiimwe Charity, a determined and ambitious young girl with dreams of making a difference in the field of medicine. As Eliots delved into the intricacies of Electro Chemistry and demystified Biology, Charity's confidence insanely soared. She began to believe that her aspirations of becoming a medic, be it a nurse, child care attendant, critical care specialist, advanced field epidemiologist, or even a medical policy advocate were within reach.

Eliots soon learned that Charity's dedication to her studies knew no bounds. She pursued Biology and Chemistry as her majors in Advanced levels, while also minoring in sub Maths, alongside Physics and GP. Her thirst for knowledge led her to join Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, where she embarked on a journey to become a Clinical Paramedic and specialised in critical care nursing and related sciences.

Charity's journey didn't end there!Driven by her compassion and desire to make a difference, she frequently finds herself in India, working alongside special needs children undergoing life-changing surgeries. With her expertise and empathy, Charity helps restore these children to full and vibrant lives (alongside teams of medical specialists in India), leaving an everlasting impact on them and their families.

Charity's story is just one shining example of the countless lives that Eliots has touched through his mentorship and selfless teaching. His unwavering support and guidance have empowered numerous boys and girls to pursue their dreams and create positive change wherever they go.

As Eliots continued his own educational journey, he joined Makerere University in Kampala to pursue a degree in Wildlife and Comparative Veterinary Health & Related Medicine between 2008 and 2013. During his years of study, he also served as a consulting Biochemist at Wits College Namulanda, Ebenezer Christian College, Entebbe, and Royal College Kawempe, all in the central region of Uganda.

However, Eliots's path took an unexpected turn when he decided to follow his passion for aviation. He made the bold choice to leave the natural sciences behind and pursue a career in the Ugandan AirForces in the field of Air Traffic Management. With his Aerodrome Control Rating and membership to the Uganda Air Traffic Controllers' Association, Eliots aims to ensure the safety and efficiency of air travel, making a difference in a different realm.

As Eliots looks towards the future, his dream is to acquire a nice computer (NextGen) that will allow him to seamlessly write stories like this one. No longer confined to scratching his old iPhone 7 mini, he envisions a tool that will enable him to share inspirational tales of Charity and other like-minded former students who have taken the lessons they learned from him and are doing incredible things, touching lives wherever they’re in the world. This doesn’t exclude Laxzy Mover, (Layeng AGGREY Fortune)whose story I will write about in the coming days given I acquire a special contraption that will help make it happen.

Eliots T, currently based at Gulu Airport in Northern Uganda, knows the power of education, mentorship, and the unwavering belief in the potential of every young mind. In a region once plagued by the infamous Lord's Resistance Army and the horrors of war, Eliots' dedication to teaching and uplifting others shines as a beacon of hope to the young & vulnerable. His story serves as a reminder that no matter the circumstances, education and compassion have the power to transform lives and create a brighter future for all. To be continued…..

Nailed!

Happy birthday, Dennis Bergkamp 🥳

Dennis retired after his testimonial match in July 2006. Here’s a section of Arsène Wenger’s tribute from the matchday programme for that fixture…

I was very lucky to find Dennis Bergkamp already in the squad when I arrived at Arsenal. You do not find a player like that everywhere you go. It was a blessing, a gift when I arrived.

I knew of his class before I arrived of course. I remember playing against Inter as manager of Monaco when he was there, and I saw him as a young player at Ajax too, but you only really find out about a player when you work with him every day.

A lot has been said about Dennis over the years; about his class, about his intelligence – his remarkable intelligence - about his vision, basically you can never say enough about the player. But the one thing which is a real example for youngsters is that Dennis, and I have worked with him for ten years don’t forget, until the last minute of his final training session, he did not lose his concentration or dedication for one minute. For me that is more remarkable than anything else. Because the talent he got when he was born, and then developed it, but what I respect more was that every single day of his career, for 20 years, until the last minute, he never made a pass in training without thinking about it, or without putting every part of his brain into it. That’s something that I consider virtually impossible to do, such is the level of dedication needed, but he did it, and that’s what made him not only a super-talented player, but a remarkable player who always had 100 per cent concentration throughout every session.

That is a dream for a manager because I have seen many talented players, and some average players, give only 50 per cent concentration in training.

In England you have a phrase that Dennis was always a pleasure to watch. Well let me tell you that behind that pleasure for the viewer, was a great deal of dedication and hard work from Dennis.

When you have a player like that as a coach, you do not tell him how to play football, you just try to fit him into the team in the way which allows him to express his talent to the maximum potential.

He was always a striker, yet not a striker – a midfielder yet not a midfielder, so I always felt that the second striker position was his natural position. He was at ease there, he knew when to drop off, and he could just smell out the game. He had instinct and super intelligence. As well as his talent, he had super, super intelligence.

His role in the team changed over the years. When I first arrived he was a goalscorer, and obsessed by scoring like may forwards are, but slowly he became more obsessed by the team and by how much he can provide. He understood that he could score less, but help the team score more. But he still loved to score goals, and great goals too. I think my favourite would probably be the one he scored against Leicester at Filbert Street, his third in a fantastic hat-trick. It was something exceptional.

Dennis has always been a big favourite of the fans, and that sometimes puts extra pressure on me as a manager when he is on the bench. But you know that when you have to put a player like Dennis on the bench, even at 37, you still think sometimes it could be a mistake. You also feel unfair to him sometimes, but he always helped the team until the very end.

You will see today the respect that he had within the game, because I think that every player who played with him would love to be involved today. The players that will be playing in this game think a lot of Dennis, they respect him so much as a player and he was a joy to play with.

Personally I’m really looking forward to the game today too. It’s great to see the old players again. We have shared lots of good and bad moments over the years, happily mainly good moments!

I hope Dennis enjoys the occasion, just as much as I have enjoyed working with him, and I’m sure you have enjoyed watching him, over the past decade.
