Finance is the blood of business. When the cash flows are not well managed even a most profitable business can choke and die. Through our 12 years we have been able to offer keen insights on project financing start ups and new business alike. My manager once advised me on the inevitability of risk and then added that risk mitigation is in mathematical calculation.

Organizations are the instruments to achieve set goals or objectives. This is the first step ; the second step is making use of the organization resources to efficiently and effectively achieve the organizations goals and objectives. A recent experience at Kampala's immigration department and the issuers of driving permits has reinforced for me these lessons.

At both locations there exists a horde of willing brokers who claim to help speed the process. As one who has gone through both I recognized the efficiency the structure has created by eliminating the so called helpers and designing a transparent system to help them fulfill their mandate. Clear process map, and dedicated staff and systems inbuilt to support the process.

The organization is the structure for attaining goals and objectives. So the organization must be aligned to attain a best fit for its men, method, materials and machines. Men must be trained in the method to use the machines to optimize materials

The debacle of a woman stopping short 400,Meters , one lap in a 10000 meters hurdle smacks of in professionalism. Its is not as if runners are supposed to add the laps in their heads. There was an abuse of systems and lack of professional structure to support this woman. In short a failure of leadership. Sun Tzu said, " If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood the general is to blame."

It does not matter that you are short, sit on the shoulder of the friendly giant and you will see even further than the giant. Its called leverage.

The war in Sudan typifies the messy situation that a manager operates in; uncertain, capricious, dynamic and unpredictable. Management is about managing risk, anticipating the unknown and the unforeseeable. And remember excuses do not count; managers must manage! There are no two ways about that!

There is a thread of Nokia CEO speech doing the rounds on Net. " We did nothing wrong. .." How do you know you are doing nothing wrong. ..when sometimes even doing nothing, failing to anticipate the storm, failing to anticipate and weather change....all these are doing wrong things. A manager sits under a perpetual sword of Damacoles. He must be dynamic, as my friend Robert says in Knowtion!.

There is no right way of doing the wrong thing. In management class we were loaded with Peter Drucker's message that there is nothing as useless as doing effectively that which should not be done at all. To what purpose ought you strive doing that which should not be done! Indeed it is like chasing the wind.

I do not know if the story is figurative or not. What I know is that these chaps had resolved to build a huge tower; I believe it was around Babel. And so they got building, and one must assume that they had the authority from BCCA or Babel City Council Authority. It was then when some calamity struck and they began speaking in tongues and different languages where none could understand the other that they could not communicate and construction came to a stillbirth. This ought to illustrate to all thinking men the power and importance of communication.

Four thousand years ago, with poor technology the Egyptians built pyramids which are still standing to this day. Now in Kampala we have house that cannot even stand for 4 months. This is mind boggling!
