Another composting barn taking shape, this time in Taranaki. 🐄
Designed for a 400-cow herd, this barn measures 86m x 45.5m, creating a purpose built environment to support cow comfort, feed management and greater control through changing conditions.
Still plenty of progress to come, but it’s already starting to show its scale.

One of the biggest differences Waka Dairies has seen from housing cows? What happens outside the barn.
Keeping cows off paddocks through challenging winter conditions means less pugging and less damage to the soil.
That leaves cleaner areas after crops have been harvested and gives the farm greater flexibility to get back onto paddocks when the weather allows, rather than spending valuable time waiting for damaged ground to dry out and recover.
“Massive difference to our pasture and our ability to crop our ground.”
A barn isn’t just about what happens under the roof. It can change how you manage the wider farming system.
Sometimes it doesn’t take long to see the difference.
Just 10 days into operating their new feedpad cover, this farmer is already seeing the benefits.
The cows have taken to it straight away, settling in comfortably and happily. And with some pretty rubbish weather arriving during those first 10 days, having the option to bring the herd under cover rather than leave them out in the paddock has already shown its value.
“We’ve only been running for 10 days, but already the benefits are easy to spot.”
It’s still early days, but it’s a pretty strong start.

A big investment, but one made with the long term in mind.
When this farming family began looking at options for a new covered feedpad, they wanted infrastructure that would improve efficiency across the farm and give them more control through challenging weather conditions.
Just 10 days into using the new feedpad cover, the benefits are already easy to see.
The cows have settled straight in, they’re comfortable under cover, and on a steep to rolling farm, having somewhere to bring them before the weather turns helps reduce pressure on paddocks and minimise pasture damage.
The covered feedpad is also helping improve feed utilisation and reduce wastage, while making day-to-day management more efficient for a farm operated by just 1.5 labour units.
“This is going to outlive me. It’s something I’ll pass down. When you’re investing an awful lot of money, you want to know it’s done right.”
Only early days, but already proving to be a valuable addition to the farming system.

Considering a barn system for your farm? One of the best things you can do is go and see how other farmers are using them.
Look at different buildings, different farming systems and, importantly, how they perform when farming conditions are at their hardest. Through the middle of winter, during calving or when summer starts to dry out.
Every farm is different, so it’s about understanding what will suit your conditions and your operation.
For Waka Dairies, getting animals housed and off pasture has been a fantastic move.
“We’ll probably never look back on that.”

New feed storage for Lakeside Dairies.
Designed to keep feed protected, organised and easily accessible. The additional height also allows trailers to tip feed directly into the shed, making unloading faster, easier and more practical.
A peek at the development next door, featuring the Aztech Futura Box Beam system. It’s been exciting to watch this build come together so close to home as it all takes shape.

Calving is demanding enough without the weather working against you.
A composting barn provides cows with a sheltered, dry and comfortable environment during one of the most important stages of the season. It can support calmer cows, closer monitoring, easier intervention when needed and better working conditions for the team.
It also helps protect pasture from damage during wet conditions, while giving farmers greater control over how and where cows are managed through calving.
A better environment for the cows, the calves and the people caring for them.
