How can I be so sick, and yet be one of the lucky ones? 🕯️

How can I, a person who spends roughly 20 hours a day in bed, outside of medical appointments and the odd social activity once month; who can only work from home with a lot of support and flexibility (although it makes me actively sicker, I don’t receive disability benefits so have no other option); who requires a wheelchair to leave the house, can shower once a week at maximum, and does not do any cooking, cleaning, or chores because I am not well enough, be lucky?

Because this is life with only MODERATE myalgic encephelomyelitis 💙

Severe ME is unlike anything you can imagine. It’s years (or decades) of lying in one room, in the dark, unable to tolerate light and sound, or communicate with those you love. It’s fighting for help, because the health system isn’t set up for patients who can’t leave their beds. It’s dying, because the disease is so severe.

And yet people still think it’s just “being tired”.

Mild ME is losing 50% of every single thing you do. Severe ME is losing 99% (which yes, includes things like the ability to digest food - that takes energy too).

So tonight I’m joining MECFS Canterbury for , and turning my , in a quiet act of solidarity to symbolise the isolation and extreme light sensitivity experienced by people with Severe ME. I’m sharing to honour the often-invisible suffering, and for all those who are too sick to advocate for themselves.
