Daily (2021) presents a selection of nihonga and oil paintings by Iłla Jeraševič and Nina Ždanovič. The artists focus on the innate beauty of the quotidian moment, reflected in nature and objects around. In piecing together their experiences with presence and the surroundings, they construct a visually contrasting, yet conceptually rhythmical narrative.

Iłla Jeraševič works within Japanese painting tradition, blending long-established classical practices with a contemporary approach. The nature motif combined with the bold usage of the gold leaf investigates human ability to notice and appreciate the subtle beauty of the everyday. Jeraševič’s spare application of color makes his work multi-dimensional, inviting the viewer to interact with it and explore the pieces from different angles. If the viewer positions in a way that the light hits the reflective surface of the gold leaf directly, it can be blinding. However, only a slight shift in the standpoint results in an intricate play of light and shadow, revealing the previously hidden pattern of the painting.
The oil paintings of Nina Ždanovič delve into the juxtaposition of humans and the places they find themselves in. She explores whether the contemporary person, used to a hectic urban lifestyle, lost the ability to slow down and observe the beauty and stillness of the mundane. Ždanovič reflects whether the only way left to access the stillness and beauty of the moment is to erase the human presence from the equation altogether. Through her work, she is engaging the viewer into a dialogue by paraphrasing the well-known philosophical thought experiment: If there is a moment of beauty and no one is around to witness it, is it still beautiful?

Iłla Jeraševič (Belarus) is based in Chiba and is obtaining his Master’s Degree in Japanese painting at the Tokyo University of Arts.

Nina Ždanovič (Lithuania) is based in Tokyo and is currently completing her Ph.D. program at the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, at the University of Tsukuba.

以前本で読んだ言葉「この世には赤の他人など存在しない」なぜなら「相手の存在を認識した瞬間、自分のこころを相手に投影してしまうから」。
相手の顔や声を知った時点で、我々は無意識にその人に対して自分のイメージを投影している。
わたしはずっと、他者の象徴として、くまのぬいぐるみを描いてきた。ただの布や綿でできたそれを、ある種の生命を持つものとして感じてしまう。
くまのぬいぐるみは、わたしにとって、自己から外部の世界への窓となる「あいだのひと」である。
わたしは「わたし」自身が持つこころを、「あいだのひと」を通して見る。

Artist Deanna Gabiga:

Recently living in Hawai’i and now in Japan, I am fascinated by the striking colors of the warm tropical waters surrounding the islands. Also beautiful, freshwater, which is limited—especially in Hawai’i— and risks contamination by heavy industry. Water is often a driving force that inspires my art work.

Metals are my favorite medium in which to play. I revel in the fluidity of metals, feeling the copper wire flow through my hands as I stitch it into textile sculptures with my custom-made crochet hooks.

The copper wire is often combined with colorful fibers using varying crochet techniques. Stitching for me is a meditative act as the smooth copper wire glides through my fingers and over my crochet hook. Row upon row of copper wire creates a fabric that becomes like water flowing through my hands yet can choose to be as solid as any surface tension. Fibers are able to capture the myriad of greens to blues to silver and deep turquoise that make up the warm tropical waters around Hawai’i.

Rest your eyes on the minimalist artworks created through meticulous stitch work and fiber inspired by the beautiful, shimmering waters around the islands of Hawai’i.

Flowers bloom when we give them water, sunlight, love, and patience. And like flowers, we all have the potential to bloom. Every person, every single one of us, have a bud inside waiting to be found and nurtured. While we are all different, we are also all the same. We walk different roads, but share the same pains and joys. There are ugly sides to each of us: insecurity, envy, guilt, sadness. But we possess beautiful sides waiting to be discovered as well: our gentle soul, our giving nature, our resilience. Like flowers, we need love and patience to nurture these beautiful sides of ourselves.

花は、水、日光、愛、そして時間を与えると咲く。そして花のように、私たちも皆、開花する可能性を持っている。すべての人、私たち一人一人の中に、見つけられて育てられるのを待っているつぼみがある。私たちは皆違うが、実は私たちは皆同じだ。私たちは違った道を歩むが、同じ苦痛と喜びを共有している。私たち一人一人には不安、嫉妬、罪悪感、悲しみなどの醜い側面があるが、私たちには、発見されるのを待っている美しい側面もある。それは、私たちの穏やかさや優しさ、立ち直る強さである。花のように、自分自身のこれらの美しい側面を育むために、愛と時間が必要なのだ。

My work aims to inspire viewers to look inside themselves and discover the beauty and love previously thought to be lacking. If we learn to love ourselves a little more, we can give ourselves grace, and realize that we all have the potential to grow into our best selves.

I hope you find your flowers and that your flowers bloom. I hope one day that we all bloom like flowers.
