Wildlife Rescue Cork

✨ Faces of the Rescue ✨

Last but not least for our volunteers feature: this week, meet our beautiful pair of volunteers.

Our volunteers are the heart of everything we do. Their time, passion, and love make it possible for us to keep rescuing and caring for animals in need. We truly couldn’t do it without them.

That’s why we want you to get to know the incredible humans behind the scenes.

This Saturday, meet Rafaela and Jankiel !
Read more about them and their roles at the rescue on their slides. 💚

We recieved this gorgeous fox from our friends in Sera husky rescue in Kerry last week. He recieved veterinary care and is on a treatment plan. We have seen small improvements in him over the week but still a long road ahead with guarded prognosis for the time being. He presented completely unresponsive and collapsed, a week later and now is much stronger and walking around at night.

He is being cared for by the team here and has access to different foods and also daily enrichment boxes to help keep his mind busy. These contain different food items and small treats. 🥰

One of the health indicators when a hedgehog is admitted is, can it curl up properly? If a leg remains stuck out of the curl it can indicate a fracture in the leg or can sometimes be swelling from a constriction injury from nets or similar. In these situations we bring the hedgehog to a vets for an xray to see what we are dealing with. In this photo you can also see hedgie is feeling a bit unwell as the eyes are semi closed and sunken in.

When each animal is admitted it receives a full head to toe exam to make sure we identify all ailements and don't just focus on the main reasons they were admitted. 🥰

That sweet sweet smell of someone cooking dinner when you get home....or in Mr. Hedgies case one of his staff have opened up a new pouch of wet cat food for him. I do mean his staff. Our seasonal staff and volunteers work so hard to care for all the animals onsite. We do everything we can to ensure they have what they need. For the last 5 months they have been here from 7am till 10pm or later most nights. That is a lot of hours and a lot of care given. But these animals are worth it all. 🥰🦔

It's not raining men here at the rescue....it's raining doves and pigeons 😅. These 3 collared doves have been hand reared at the centre over the last few weeks. We have close to 50 pigeons/doves at the rescue receiving care. I am very glad these little bugs are safe and warm with us tonight in this horrible weather. 🥰

We are thrilled to welcome our first international speaker to the Wild Assembly on 21st November at UCC: Courtney Collins.

Courtney is a lecturer at The University of Vermont, USA and an adjunct lecturer at University College Cork, Ireland. She has a particular interest in animal behaviour in captivity, human-animal interactions, education in the zoo, and how zoos can contribute to conservation. Courtney earned a BA in Biology from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Then an MSc in Zoology from Trinity College Dublin, which focused on visitor effects in captive western lowland gorillas, and a PhD from University College Cork. Her PhD investigated children’s learning in zoos and aquariums and the behavioural response of captive animals to visitors. Courtney then completed a postdoc at UCC which focused on human-animal interactions in the zoo and promoting pro-conservation behaviour in visitors. She is widely published in these areas. Courtney has worked for wildlife sanctuaries, several animal shelters, a conservation trust, and conducted research in many zoos.

Courtney will be speaking about « The utility of zoos and centers for conservation and biodiversity ».
