Mathy was supposed to be helping at our booth during last month’s Teaching and Learning Conference at the University of Waterloo... but apparently there were rocks to investigate.🕵️‍♂️🪨

Caught on camera here at the Earth Sciences Museum Peter Russell Rock Garden, Mathy spent some time exploring Ontario’s largest geological garden, featuring more than 100 rock and mineral specimens spanning 4 billion years of earth’s history.

When you're a "mathscot", it's hard to resist a collection with numbers that big!

Learning mathematics is much more than just finding the answers to homework problems, but the act of doing these assignments is vital.

Getting hands-on with the math develops a student’s understanding and skills, and builds the foundation they need to master the next topic. If AI is completing the assignment, the student is not learning, which will affect not only their ability to pass the next mid-term or exam, but their ability to learn the next topic, and the next course.

But we can’t stop students from using AI, so now what?

As it turns out: a lot of tracking down old hardware, documentation, packaging, and details we'd never even thought about.

On , we’re remembering a project we were especially proud to be part of: contributing a complete Maple V setup - a version still remembered fondly by many - to the Science Museum’s Mathematics: The Winton Gallery in London ahead of its opening nearly 10 years ago.

Putting together a complete submission wasn’t easy, but the experience was a reminder that preserving the history of computing - telling the story of the tools, experiments, and the people behind them - really matters.

This past weekend, we were at McMaster University for the 2026 First-Year Math & Stats in Canada Conference.

The conference focused on examining the current landscape of university mathematics and statistics education, and imagining what comes next. Across sessions and conversations, educators shared ideas on active learning, assessments, AI, student support, and practical ways to improve the first-year experience.

We were glad to share our talk on AI and math learning, run demos, and connect with so many people thinking carefully about what works, what can improve, and where teaching is headed next.

A busy day yesterday at the 17th Annual University of Waterloo Teaching and Learning conference.

We talked about AI and math learning, ran demos, met a brilliant crowd of educators - and yes, Mathy was also out and about on campus and hard to miss.
