Happy World Photography Day (August 19)! It marks the date in 1839, when the French Academy of Sciences announced the daguerreotype - the first publicly available way to make permanent pictures with a camera.

Reuben Sallows, in the late 1880s, used a large, heavy camera that weighed more than 10 lbs. and required using glass plate negatives treated with silver gelatin. People had to be posed and hold perfectly still for 8-30 seconds, while the exposure was made on the plate.

The invention of roll film in 1887 and Kodak's Brownie box camera in 1900 made photography more widely accessible to the general public.
