WORD OF THE WEEK//CHRISTMAS TREE
It sounds festive, but in the energy industry a Christmas Tree is a system of valves, spools, and fittings installed on a wellhead to control the flow of oil or natural gas.

The message at this year's Global Energy Show was clear: the world needs more Canadian energy and the infrastructure that supports it.

From pipelines and power generation to transportation and industrial development, Canada's energy sector continues to play a critical role in meeting growing demand while driving economic growth at home.

At Pipestone Projects, we help bring projects from concept to completion through planning, estimating, scheduling, risk analysis, construction management, environmental services, and project controls. Our team works alongside owners, developers, and contractors to help deliver projects with confidence.

As investment in Canadian energy and infrastructure continues to grow, having the right project expertise in place is more important than ever.

Pipeline 101// What is a Class Location?
A Class Location is a designation used to identify the population density surrounding a pipeline. The more people and structures located near a pipeline, the higher the class designation.
Class Locations play a critical role in pipeline design because they influence factors such as operating pressure, wall thickness, inspection requirements and overall safety considerations.
As communities grow and land use changes, pipeline operators regularly monitor Class Locations to ensure their systems continue to meet regulatory requirements.
Understanding Class Locations helps demonstrate how pipeline design is tailored to the environments and communities they serve.

Day 2 at Global Energy Show Canada was spent exploring exhibits, connecting with industry professionals, and learning about the innovations shaping the future of energy.

It's always inspiring to see the technology, expertise, and people driving our industry forward. Calgary has earned its place as one of the world's leading energy hubs, built on innovation, investment, and the talented individuals who make it happen.

Another great day of conversations and learning from across the energy sector.

Day 1 at the Global Energy Show Canada is complete.

One of the most notable themes throughout the exhibition and conference was the growing focus on AI, data centres, and the infrastructure required to support them. From power generation and transmission to utilities, engineering, and technology providers, many exhibitors were showcasing solutions designed to meet the significant energy demands of the rapidly expanding data centre sector.

It was also impressive to see the international presence at the event. Representatives from countries around the world attended, reinforcing the importance of global collaboration as the energy industry continues to evolve and address growing demand, energy security, and new technologies.

The Pipestone Projects team appreciated the opportunity to connect with industry leaders, learn about emerging trends, and gain insight into the projects and investments shaping the future of energy in Alberta and beyond.

We look forward to seeing what Day 2 brings.

Mining 101//
Did You Know?
Canada is the world's largest producer of potash, supplying approximately one third of the global market. Potash is a key ingredient in fertilizer and helps farmers around the world grow the food needed to feed a growing population.

Before a potash mine is built, expanded, or upgraded, extensive planning takes place behind the scenes. This is where estimating plays a critical role. Estimators help project teams understand potential costs, assess risks, evaluate construction options, and develop budgets that support informed investment decisions.

From early concept studies through detailed project ex*****on, accurate estimates help mining companies plan infrastructure, facilities, utilities, and supporting systems needed to bring these resources to market.

At Pipestone Projects, we understand that successful projects begin long before construction starts. Sound estimating provides the foundation for better decisions, improved project certainty, and more predictable outcomes.

Mining 101: Every tonne of potash starts with planning, analysis, and a well-developed estimate.

Pipeline construction takes place around the world, and it's always interesting to see how projects are executed in different regions.

Our friends in Colombia shared this photo from a pipeline welding operation, highlighting the skilled tradespeople who help build and maintain critical energy infrastructure. While safety standards, regulations, PPE requirements, and work practices can vary from country to country, the shared commitment to quality workmanship and getting the job done safely remains a common goal across the industry.

One of the benefits of working in a global industry is the opportunity to learn from different experiences, environments, and approaches to construction.

Thank you to our colleagues in Colombia for sharing a look at their work in the field.
