The Multicultural Workers Collective works closely with unions like CFMEU WA, making sure every worker, whatever their visa status or background, has access to a fair and safe workplace.

Last week that partnership took us to the Construction Skills Training Centre (CSTC), where we mapped out how to support migrant workers in the construction sector. Western Australia is one of the states with the most temporary skilled visas granted for construction roles in Australia (Jobs and Skills Australia, January 2026).

⚠️ Behind every fast food shift, the numbers tell a story.

A survey of 454 hospitality (fast food) workers by the Migrant Justice Institute found that 74% were in insecure work, employed casually or on an ABN. Among those on an ABN, 98% were underpaid.

The underpayment rarely stood alone. Survey participants also reported:
27% received no superannuation
20% were paid partly or entirely in cash
14% had unexplained deductions from their wages

Our team delivered a Multicultural Community Legal Education session for international students from all over the world who are starting their studies at North Metropolitan TAFE.

90% of students in the room said they will be looking for a part time job while studying in Perth, so we walked them through their migration related workplace rights, covering basic wages, working conditions, and the visa protections that come with a student visa.

🔎 A national survey released in May 2026 by the Migrant Justice Institute found that two in three temporary visa holders were paid less than they were legally owed. Sessions like this one exist to close that gap.
