Warehouses can change significantly over the festive period — stock levels move, staffing changes and some facilities operate with reduced teams.

Before shutdown or reduced operations, make sure your firefighting equipment hasn't quietly become the forgotten item on the wall.

Extinguishers, hose reels, hydrants, boosters and associated systems need to be maintained and defects addressed.

Get your fire equipment checked before the festive period.

December holidays give schools something they rarely have during term: quieter buildings.

It’s an ideal opportunity to have firefighting equipment inspected and serviced, attend to hose reels and hydrants, investigate fire detection faults and complete remedial work with less disruption to teaching.

Don’t wait for the January rush. Get the campus ready before staff and learners return.

Fire equipment is there for the day you hope never comes.
Keeping it properly inspected and maintained is important for life safety, but fire-protection measures may also form part of your insurer’s risk requirements or policy conditions.
An extinguisher hanging on the wall is not the same thing as knowing it is serviceable.

Before year-end, check when your equipment was last serviced, deal with outstanding defects and review any recommendations you’ve been putting off. Small footer: Always refer to your individual insurance policy for specific requirements.

Many businesses prepare for year-end by closing accounts, finishing orders and setting alarms. Fire protection deserves a place on that list too.

If your extinguishers, hose reels, hydrants or fire systems are due for service, don’t leave it until everyone returns in January. Use the quieter weeks to get servicing and identified remedial work up to date. Fire safety doesn’t go on holiday.

Do you actually know what the markings on your fire extinguisher mean?

There’s more information on that red cylinder than most people realise.

9 kg — The amount of extinguishing agent inside.
43A 233B — The fire rating, indicating its tested firefighting capability for those fire classes.

A, B & C — The types of fires the extinguisher is designed to fight:
A — Ordinary solids
B — Flammable liquids
C — Flammable gases

Manufacturer markings — Permanent identification, including manufacturing information, can be found on the cylinder or foot ring.

Operating instructions — They’re printed on the extinguisher. Know where to find them before you need them.

Important: The size of an extinguisher and its fire rating are not the same thing.

An extinguisher shouldn’t just hang on the wall for compliance.
Know it. Check it. Keep it serviced.
