A young filly we are very excited to offer shares in.

Crimson Morn is a beautiful, racy two-year-old filly by Malmoos, the 2021 South African Triple Crown winner who has made an exceptional start to his stallion career.

His first crop has already produced Grade 2 winner Marchland, and Malmoos finished the 2025/26 season as South Africa's Leading First Season Sire.

And we know the Malmoos progeny first-hand. We train Life In Colour, another member of his first crop, who has already won twice for the stable.

Crimson Morn's dam is by Vercingetorix, South Africa's reigning Champion Sire, while her second dam Classique Story was runner-up in the Grade 1 SA Fillies Guineas and produced Grade 2 Gold Bowl winner and Grade 1 Gold Cup-placed Canterbury Tale.

Horses don’t have collarbones!

Unlike humans, there is no bony connection attaching a horse’s front legs directly to its ribcage.

Instead, the front of the horse’s body is suspended between the forelimbs by a powerful network of muscles known as the thoracic sling.

Think of it almost like a natural suspension system. It helps support the horse’s weight, allows freedom of movement through the shoulders, and assists in absorbing the enormous forces generated when galloping at speed.

Just another example of how remarkably designed the equine athlete really is. 🐎💨

Did you know that horses can’t breathe through their mouths?

Unlike humans, a horse is an obligate nasal breather, meaning that under normal circumstances, every breath it takes has to pass through its nostrils.

This is because of the unique arrangement of the horse’s soft palate and larynx, which effectively separates the mouth from the respiratory airway. Even during intense exercise, a horse cannot simply open its mouth and start breathing through it the way we can.

And that becomes pretty incredible when you consider what happens during a race.

At rest, a horse may move roughly 67 litres of air per minute. During strenuous exercise, that can increase to around 1,800 litres per minute. All of that air has to travel through the nose and upper airway.

That’s why a racehorse’s respiratory system is such an important part of athletic performance. Even a relatively small restriction to the airway can make a significant difference when a horse is galloping at full speed.

HORSE SPOTLIGHT | HAZY DAZY 🌼

From R37,500 to Grade 1 glory. 🏆

Hazy Dazy’s story is one that reminds us why we love racing.

Bred by Breedon Stud for the late David Makins, the daughter of Act Of War out of Rabbedoe was part of Makins’ final crop. Rabbedoe herself was trained by Corne Spies, adding another special connection to the story. After David’s passing, his horses were offered at dispersal and Hazy Dazy was purchased for just R37,500.

Breeder Ingrid Klug later recalled that, when Corne asked which of the youngsters she liked most, Hazy Dazy was the one she picked. What followed was quite a journey.

After showing promise on debut, Hazy Dazy put together three wins in the space of just a few weeks, progressing rapidly through the ranks before announcing herself on the big stage with victory in the Grade 3 Ducat Africa Fillies Mile.

She then took things to another level.

Her Grade 1 victory was especially memorable, giving apprentice Trent Mayhew his first Grade 1 success, while Hazy Dazy became one of the season’s standout three-year-old fillies.

From an initial purchase price of R37,500, she has already earned more than R1.8 million in stakes, with six victories to her name.

Hazy Dazy is now back at work and steadily building towards what we hope will be another exciting season ahead.

We can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds. 🌼🐎

SERGEANT SOQRAT | WINNER AT TURFFONTEIN

A wonderful result for Sergeant Soqrat, who returned to the winner’s enclosure with a very good performance at Turffontein.

He has been knocking on the door with some encouraging recent efforts, and it was particularly satisfying to see him put everything together and get the result he deserved.

A superb ride from apprentice Jacey Botes, who judged the race beautifully and brought Sergeant Soqrat home in style. It was also a special milestone for Jacey, with the victory marking his 30th career winner. Congratulations to him on a fantastic achievement.

A sincere thank you and congratulations to Mr D G Bailie and Adv J J B Schutte for their continued support and belief in the horse.

This is win number six of the season for Spies Racing, and we are delighted with the momentum the stable has built in these opening weeks.

We continue to go from strength to strength, and there is plenty to look forward to.

NORTHERN EUROPEAN GETS IT DONE IN STYLE! 🏇🔥

A brilliant performance from Northern European at the Vaal, storming clear to win by almost five lengths under a masterful ride from Callan Murray.

She travelled beautifully behind the favourite before being produced at exactly the right moment, and once she found daylight, she powered away from the field.

This marks our fifth winner of the season, and incredibly, we have now had a winner every single week since the new season began.

A huge thank you to all of Northern European's owners for their continued support and belief in the stable. Thank you as well to everyone who continues to support Spies Racing, from our staff and riders to our loyal followers.

It has been a wonderful start to the season, and we are very excited about the direction the stable is heading.
