For decades, rabies was one of Europe's most feared diseases.

The virus spread through wild red foxes, threatening livestock, pets, wildlife, and occasionally humans. Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal, making prevention the only effective defense.

Many believed the answer was simple:

Reduce the fox population.

But Switzerland chose a completely different approach.

Instead of killing wildlife, scientists decided to protect it.

Beginning in the late 1970s and expanding through the 1980s, Swiss wildlife authorities launched an ambitious oral vaccination program.

Small edible bait cubes containing an oral rabies vaccine were distributed across forests, mountains, and fields—initially by hand and later by helicopters and aircraft.

The plan relied on one simple fact.

Foxes naturally search for food.

When they found the bait, they ate it.

As the vaccine was released inside their mouths, their immune systems developed protection against rabies.

The foxes had no idea they were being vaccinated.

But the results were extraordinary.

Each vaccinated fox became another barrier preventing the virus from spreading.

Year after year, rabies cases declined dramatically.

Eventually, transmission of terrestrial rabies stopped altogether.

Switzerland was officially declared free of terrestrial rabies, becoming one of the greatest examples of wildlife disease control in modern history.

The success didn't stop there.

Several European countries—including Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, Austria, and others—adopted the same strategy, leading to the elimination of fox-mediated rabies across much of Western and Central Europe.

The achievement transformed public health, protected millions of domestic animals, preserved wildlife populations, and saved countless lives without resorting to widespread culling.

What makes this story remarkable isn't just the science.

It's the philosophy behind it.

Instead of fighting nature...

Scientists learned to work with it.

Sometimes the greatest breakthroughs don't come from using more force.

They come from understanding how nature already works.

And by helping wildlife stay healthy, Switzerland also protected its people.

He is a bit quiet and subdued, but once he is home, he will be the MOST amazing friend and companion one could ever hope for. He is only about 4 years old, in the prime of his life. He still has so many years left to spend with his forever family.

Mum and 7 pups of only 3 weeks are at risk of euthanasia because the landlady doesn’t want them on her property.

She has called the SPCA who euthanise for space, either those they take in or others to make space.

An IMMEDIATE Foster is needed for the whole family, Toshca is easy going, around 1 year and good with cats.

Mum was rescued whilst pregnant, before she was beaten into submission and food withheld.

Toshca is understandably scared and eats her food quickly for fear of it being taken away.

Amanda’s Ark is closed to new intakes, rescue can only be undertaken with help from another rescue and an immediate Foster.

Donations will also be needed for rescue costs including steris, vaccines and parasite prevention treatments and Mum and pups will ultimately need homes when they are ready.

The Cluny team is packed, prepared and ready for this weekend's outreach... and of course, so is Daisy!

The vehicles are loaded, the equipment has been checked, the surgical packs are sterilised, and our dedicated team is ready to make a real difference.

We're also incredibly fortunate to have a small army of volunteers joining us throughout the weekend. We anticipate this outreach being exceptionally busy, and their willingness to give up their time means we'll be able to help even more animals and support more pet owners.

Tomorrow and Sunday, we'll be providing much-needed veterinary care, including sterilisations, vaccinations, and treatments, in Bohlokong, Bethlehem helping improve the lives of animals that would otherwise have little or no access to veterinary services.
