DAY WE HONOR YOUTH OF SOUTH AFRICA.
Aluta Continua (Struggle Continues) ✊🏾✊🏾
Just before 1960’s, the government introduced ee they called BANTU Education, simply means Education for Black People of SA. segregation law that legislated for several aspects of the apartheid system and enforced racially-separated educational facilities. The government was spending more on a white child’s’ education and less on a black’s child’s education. Just in the mid 1970’s the apartheid government introduced Afrikaans as a medium of instructions in the school syllabus, there was a tension sparked in amongst the youth in Soweto, many believed that Afrikaans is the language of the oppressor. The majority of students failed dismally in the first and second quarter of 1976.
The students of Soweto mobilized on a non-violence protest and a peace march showing resistance towards the oppression laws.
In 1976 June 16, the Soweto students and other Students representatives from other townships in Johannesburg gathered on the famous Vilakazi Street, in Soweto. The crowd of over 10 000 students led by Tsietsi Mashinini and other students leaders holding placards and singing struggle songs with intention to march to Orlando Stadium to hand over a memorandum to show grievances were confronted with the police holding rifles and police dogs in presence. The students were told to go back to school as their march was illegal and students resisted because the police were speaking in Afrikaans. The police fired teargas carnitas to disperse the thousands students and released the German Shepherds dogs and the dogs disappeared in the crowds and later thrown back to the police injured and one dog died, that’s when the police released fire, the police decided that the life of a dog was more important than the life of a black child. Thousands kids were injured, thousands bitten, thousands fled the country to go to exile, the crossfire left a 12 year Hector Pieterson dead, and other dozens dead, as the police drives out the township, they left the corpses lying around. WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS, WE WERE MADE TO SURVIVE
Have you ever thought of some of the dangerous destinations in the world? Well, I’m sure you can name a few, think of the state of its tourism, and does the perception stops tourism? The answer is no – and why?
And firstly let’s start by identifying what makes a city to be dangerous:
Throughout history, cities have become more dangerous with higher homicide rates where poverty has worsened, unemployment has increased, migration from the region has accelerated and law and order institutions have weakened or become corrupt.
The drug trade and the associated presence of rival criminal gangs has also been proven to destabilise peace and security in cities around the world.
South Africa also featured prominently in the top 50, with Nelson Mandela Bay (46th), Durban (44th) and the capital city Cape Town (15th) all ranking.
Cape Town, the so-called ‘murder capital’ of a nation continually plagued by violence and racial tension, has been in the top 10 in previous annual listings and has been placed in the top 20 most dangerous cities since Security, Justice and Peace began analysing homicide rates.
In conclusion! Let us all free to travel, ‘’travelling is painful, but you leave something behind and take experience away with you’’
Travel Safety tips:
• Keep your travel plans, including accommodation details, to yourself.
• Don’t hitch hike.
• Try not to travel at night, unless you are with a tourist guide.
• Avoid isolated areas of the cities you visit, especially at night.
• Ask for your tour/travel agent for advice of ‘safe’ vs ‘unsafe’ local areas.
• As general rule, city streets that include children and women suggest the area is safe for families.
• Keep a photocopy of your important documents in a safe place.
• Use ATMs during the day when there are people around.
• Try to rely on credit cards than cash.
• If you are mugged, don’t fight back. It is better to lose a few dollars and a wristwatch than get injured.
