Dear Valued Customer

We have been advised by some of our tracking companies that they have become aware of a criminal scam by a car-theft syndicate.
Some customers have received calls from people posing as employees of vehicle-tracking companies. These individuals claim that customers’ tracking devices need repairing and then attempt to steal their vehicles after booking an appointment.
This scam is being perpetrated against clients of several vehicle-tracking companies. We are in communication with our tracking companies who have confirmed that our policyholder’s personal information has not been compromised by them, but they are investigating the matter.

WHAT TO DO
If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from your tracking company about device repairs or installation, ask the person to first confirm your account number. If they are unable to do so, simply hang up the phone. Alternatively, contact your tracking company directly to remove any doubt.

IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER
Installation technicians will never ask you to test-drive a car.

The pitfalls of not purchasing professional indemnity insurance: The struggles of the construction industry in the current economic climate
The economic crisis in South Africa has seen the construction industry struggling, with several large construction companies filing for business rescue during the course of the year.
BYCLAUDIA FIGUEIRA|CAMARGUE|JANUARY 31, 2020

The economic crisis in South Africa has seen the construction industry struggling, with several large construction companies filing for business rescue during the course of the year.

The construction industry functions in ebbs and flows, but with the current mix of high levels of government debt, a dejected economy, uncertainty, and low infrastructure-spending, new contracts are drying up. This has resulted in jobs lost, diminishing talent and highly skilled professionals leaving the country.

The repercussion being an adverse effect on quality as professionals struggle, under increased pressure, to reduce costs and work within the constraints of ever tightening budgets. This has resulted in poor workmanship, unsafe structures, increased risk, disputes and claims for damages.

Lisa Swaine, a partner at Webber Wentzel, revealed that there has been a significant increase in Professional Indemnity claims in the last couple of years, particularly in the built environment.

Barriers to quality are noticed in procurement, design and construction. In the current and competitive tendering environment, professionals and contractors are signing onerous contracts with high emphasis on price and shortened project periods. Design is fraught with inadequate detail and specification, the deployment of often unsupervised, cheaper junior professionals on projects, and poor design co-ordination. The construction industry is plagued by skill shortages and a lack of skilled supervision and quality control. Together with the degradation in quality is reputational damage as companies are slated in the media. And of course, the knock-on effect of a damaged reputation is financial.

Swaine spoke of numerous professional indemnity claims involving professional consultants providing services on poorly co-ordinated and managed projects, with inadequate documentation, information, detail and specification, restricting work, altering design, limiting supervision and working with other professionals and contractors equally constrained by clients' shortened project times and restrictive budgets. As quality is fundamental to the design process and ultimate construction, it goes without saying that it is destined to deteriorate if professional services are unduly hindered, restricted or curtailed. Disaster strikes, projects fail, and professional consultants are amongst those in the firing line. Claims usually run into many millions and very often into the billions.

As projects are few and far between and professional fees earned are being reduced, professionals find themselves taking on as much work as possible to stay afloat and this is when errors or omissions are most prevalent.

With the looming economic crisis we often see professionals cancelling their insurance or reducing their cover (in order to save money), however, this is the time when professionals should be more cognizant of the risks that they face, the potential damage to reputation in the instance of a professional indemnity claim, as well as the time spent trying to resolve the matter. Purchasing and maintaining your professional indemnity policy will provide professionals with the necessary peace of mind required – particularly when the crisis occurs!

The question is, can a professional afford to NOT purchase sufficient professional indemnity, particularly in what is currently a dire economic climate?

Dear Lamborghini Customer,

Lamborghini South Africa has just been informed of a new industry wide motor theft scam in which you may well be the next target!

A very sophisticated and well organised crime syndicate has begun targeting owners of high value cars, pretending to be employees of the Manufacturer/Dealership, and using intercepted email addresses or masked telephone numbers which display as a number of the Manufacturer/Dealership, informing the owner that their vehicle will be collected by the Manufacturer/Dealership for critical safety recall work to be carried out at one of their service centres.

These criminals may know your home or work address and will try to make arrangements to collect your Lamborghini from you for transport to your Lamborghini Dealership.

THIS WILL BE AN ATTEMPT TO PERSUADE YOU BY FRAUDULENT MEANS TO HAND OVER YOUR LAMBORGHINI WITH THE KEYS AND SERVICE BOOK TO THESE CRIMINALS!

If you are contacted in this manner by anybody that you do not know personally, or in any manner that you find suspicious, IMMEDIATELY contact your Lamborghini Dealership, using an alternative email address, or by using the cell phone of someone that you trust, and report the incident to any Lamborghini employee that you know personally, or to the Service Manager or the Dealer Principal of any of our Lamborghini Dealerships.

We will either authenticate the original request or take the required action.

Kindest regards,

Toby Venter
Chief Executive Officer

To all Our Client's

During the 2018 Budget speech, on the 21st of February 2018, it was announced that the Value-Added Tax (VAT) rate will be increased from 14% to 15% with effect from the 1st of April 2018.

The South African Insurance Association is in the process of engaging with the South African Revenue Service and National Treasury on the practicalities around implementing this change for the insurance industry. The intention is to obtain clarity around the implementation of the change and to get various special rulings that would address some of the difficulties envisaged by the industry.

Further communication will follow as soon as additional clarity is obtained.

Dear Clients

We are aware of the storm warnings that are currently in circulation. Please be assured that we are monitoring the situation closely. In the meantime, we would like to share a number of precautions you can take in the event of a flash flood.

Remain indoors during heavy rain Move to high ground and stay there Avoid driving in wet weather conditions (if possible) Should you be on the road, pull over at a safe location until the rain has stopped and it is safe to continue driving Vehicles on the road should keep a safe following distance and have their headlights on at all times Be cautious of falling trees and other potential hazards that could obstruct the road whilst driving Be especially careful at night, or when travelling on unfamiliar roads Cars can easily stall in water. If your car stalls, get out immediately and go to higher ground Vehicles can be swept away even by shallow water

Please do remember that our panel of approved motor assessors, non-motor loss adjusters and building contractors are on hand to expedite claims on behalf of our customers.

Regards

Cloud Saungweme
Chief Claims Officer
