A risk assessment is simply a careful examination of what, could cause harm to people, to enable precautions to be taken to prevent injury and ill-health.

A risk assessment is an important step in protecting workers and business, as well as complying with the law. It helps focus on the risks that really matter in the workplace – the ones with the potential to cause real harm. In many instances, straightforward measures can readily control risks, for example ensuring spillages are cleaned up promptly so people do not slip, or cupboard drawers are kept closed to ensure people do not trip.

Workers and others have a right to be protected from harm caused by a failure to take reasonable control measures.

Accidents and ill health can ruin lives and affect your business too if output is lost, machinery is damaged, insurance costs increase or you have to go to court. You are legally required to assess the risks in your workplace so that you put in place a plan to control the risks.

❗️Risk assessment is the process of assessing the risks to workers’ safety and health from workplace hazards. It is an examination of all aspects of work that considers:

What could cause injury or harm?
Whether the hazards could be eliminated
What control measures are, or should be, in place to control the risks
A hazard can be anything that has the potential to cause harm.

✅A risk is the chance, high or low, that somebody may be harmed by the hazard.

NUUSFLITS - Druk verkeer in Pacaltsdorp weens protesaksie. Motoriste word gemaan om geduldig te wees. GO GEORGE Pacaltsdorp-roetes is vir eers opgeskort. Meer inligting volg later.

😱 Loadshedding switches of the lights but opens the doors - that is, the doors of opportunity for criminals
Be extra vigilant during loadshedding as it may impact on your security. Make sure your alarm backup battery is functional and charged, you have a flashlight or 3 and enough candles -and then speak to Johan or Faith on 074 082 7788 at Springbok Security to find out how to arrange security for your business and home during these dark times

- Always travel with the car doors locked.

- Leave enough room between your car and the one in front to avoid being boxed in. Make sure you can see where the tyres of the car in front make contact with the road.

- Attract the attention of other motorists or pedestrians if you think you are in danger. You can use the ho**er, flash your lights, put your emergency lights on or shout.

- Be aware of anybody who approaches your car or is loitering near traffic lights, stop streets, parking areas or your driveway.

- If you suspect that you are being followed, you should ideally drive to the nearest police station. If this is not possible, drive to a safe place, but don’t go home.

- Don’t enter your garage or a parking area if you believe you are being followed. Drive to the nearest police station.

- Don’t stop if, for example, a passer-by indicates that your car has a flat tyre or other defect. Drive to the nearest service station or safe area and check it there.

- Don’t tell strangers your movements or plans.

- Don’t pick up hitchhikers or unknown people.

- Don’t leave your car door open and the engine running while opening your garage door or gates. Criminals act quicker than you would expect.

These 10 tips were provided by the SAPS.

No bus or motor vehicle access to Pacaltsdorp due to protest action and burning of tyres at the entrance to Rosedale. A protest march by the Rosedale and Syferfontein communities is due to take place this morning.
We regret to announce no bus service to Pacaltsdorp until further notice.

❓Why would we need security guards?
They secure premises and personnel by patrolling property; monitoring surveillance equipment; inspecting buildings, equipment, and access points; permitting entry. Obtains help by sounding alarms. Prevents losses and damage by reporting irregularities; informing violators of policy and procedures; restraining trespassers.
👉Call us now on 074 082 7788 / 083 593 2080 and discuss your business security needs.

Top 7 security tips

1. Know your neighbours
“Getting to know the people who live around you is invaluable in security.

2. Don’t advertise your belongings
“Houses are targeted based on the perceived value of the goods they have inside. “Leaving that flat-screen box on your pavement on bin day is like setting up a neon sign saying, ‘Pick Me!’.”

3. Invest in visual deterrents
Not all crime is planned - sometimes burglars see an easy target and just decide to take a chance.

4. Protect your perimeter
Adding an outdoor layer to your security system, including garden beams and electric fencing, linked to your alarm.

5. Don’t forget your roof
Criminals don’t always use the front door to break in. There is an increase in reports of burglars removing roof tiles to get into houses via the ceiling space.

6. Don’t make it obvious when no-one is home.
“Get a neighbor to clear your mailbox and take out your bin, and consider putting a light on a timer switch in a visible window that turns on and off in the evenings.

7. Have an emergency plan
One of the most overlooked elements of a security strategy is what to do if the worst happens and you’re home during a break-in event.

It’s not a pleasant thought, but it’s important to have a backup plan, Make sure your panic buttons work and are placed in several spots around the home, including the bathroom - a common spot for burglars to lock residents up. Have emergency services on speed dial, and think about possible escape routes that might get you out of a dangerous situation.

Holiday Safety Tip 2 - If traveling, keep your valuables in a safe. When leaving your hotel room, be sure to take only what you need with you, and leave valuables such as passports and travelers cheques in a lockable safe. Keep phones, handbags, wallets/purses, cameras and other items that can be easily snatched, out of sight.

1. We need to be on guard at all times, and always aware of our surroundings.

2. Maintain an alert stance and scan the people around you. Thieves avoid people whom they perceived is too alert and may have already noticed them.

3. If you start to have a bad feeling about your surroundings, stop and pay attention to these feelings, it is your intuition telling you not to proceed.

4. Thieves try to target people whom they perceive as more vulnerable: the elderly, women alone or women and children.

5. To avoid being targeted by thieves, think about what attracts these criminals: flashy jewelry, a large purse that looks stuffed with goodies, smart phones, shopping bags, etc.

6. Carry only what’s necessary and leave the rest at home.
When shopping, always lock your vehicle and do not leave your items in the car, lock them up in the trunk.

7. Consider a protection device such as mace, pepper spray or a taser if you know how to use them.

8. When in public, avoid being engrossed in your phone or tablet. This sounds simple, but I have seen so many people with their heads buried in their cell phones even while crossing the street.

9. When walking to your car, have your keys ready in your hand, no fishing around the parking lot for missing keys. Brief inattention to your surroundings can cost you your life. If leaving at night, try to walk with someone or have security es**rt you.

10. Train the kids to only open the door to family or friends who know the “password” and never open the door to strangers.
Keep your curtains or blinds closed. The more passersby see your appliances and items, the more likely a thief will get interested in you.

11. Consider an alarm system, security beams or a dog if your building allows it. Make sure you always lock your doors and windows.

12. Look around the area before you open your door or garage, as thieves have been know to follow people in as they get home.

13. Be careful about announcing your activities and plans on social networking sites such as Twitter or Facebook, this will give potential thieves a “heads up” that your house is available.

14. Before walking or driving up to an ATM machine, make a note of who is in the area. Is there a car just parked nearby? Are there a lot of bushes where someone can hide and jump out at you? If you are not sure, just bypass it and go somewhere else. The most you will lose is time and possibly petrol, but at least you’ll be safe.

15. When in crowded shopping centers, be alert for pickpockets especially when someone bumps into yo
If you are working late, walk out with a co-worker or call security and have them walk you to your car.

16. If you feel you are being followed home, don’t pull into your driveway. Instead, keep driving and go to a crowded area, police or fire station.

Your safety must always be your no.1 Priority.

While it's difficult to protect your home from professional thieves, most home burglaries are done by amateurs. These thieves are more easily deterred if you apply some of these simple security precautions:

Plan to "burglarize" yourself. You'll discover any weaknesses in your security system that may have previously escaped your notice.

Lock up your home, even if you go out only for a short time. Many burglars just walk in through an unlocked door or window.

For the most effective alarm system, conceal all wiring. A professional burglar looks for places where he or she can disconnect the security system.

Your house should appear occupied at all times. Use timers to switch lights and radios on and off when you're not at home.

If you have a faulty alarm that frequently goes off, get it fixed immediately and tell your neighbors that it's been repaired. Many people ignore an alarm that goes off periodically.

If you lose your keys, change the locks.

If the entrances to your home are dark, consider installing lighting with motion sensor. Most thieves don't want to be observed trying to get in a door.

• Lock all doors and windows, including your garage door, when you leave the house and while sleeping.
• Install a dead-bolt and/or a secondary locking system on doors that lead outside. Using a lock that can only be operated from the inside is an extra security measure.
• Remember that patio doors with glass panels can be especially vulnerable. Consider installing double-cylinder locks, where you need a key to unlock both sides, so that a burglar can’t enter your home simply by breaking the glass next to the lock. Also, insert a board at the bottom of the door, to prevent the door from sliding.
• Be suspicious of anyone who asks to enter your home for any type of “maintenance” reason. There are numerous cases of impersonating electricians or gas line inspectors who turn out to be dangerous. Always demand to see an official company ID.
• Install peepholes or wide-angle viewers in your doors.
• Replace burned out light bulbs quickly. Thieves like homes with inadequate lighting. Consider incorporating lighting into your landscaping.
• Keep trees and shrubs around doorways, windows and porches trimmed. The bushes that provide privacy also give burglars a place to hide. Dense shrubs can even make for a makeshift ladder, helping a thief into your home through a window.
• Consider installing an alarm system or beams.
