In 2021 , South African Council for the Architectural Profession ( ) introduced the Limited Special Dispensation (L*D) as a transitional mechanism to recognise experienced architectural and building design professionals who, due to historical qualification pathways and regulatory changes, did not easily fit into the formal registration categories.

When the L*D was closed, many competent and practicing professionals were left without a viable pathway to appropriate recognition. This negatively affected careers, limited scope of work, reduced competitiveness, and created uncertainty for individuals who had already been contributing meaningfully to the built environment.

has officially approved the reconsideration and reopening of the Limited Special Dispensation (L*D)process. This is a major win for professionals who missed out previously or need to reapply. A clear methodology and application requirements are now being developed, after which will invite new applications. This restores access, dignity, and progression within the profession.
