Our current obsession, the plaid shirt, is an icon in its own right. Not to be confused with flannel, plaid cloth refers to the visual pattern of intersecting lines, the origins of which date back to 16th-century Scottish tartan, with a passionately rich history of identity and rebellion. The pattern can be woven or printed.

The invention of the equally iconic red-and-black Buffalo Check in 1850 Pennsylvania, is the definitive uniform of the lumberjack and symbolizes the roots of the American Workwear Revolution.

The shift from workwear to ‘Fashion Rebellion’ was led by Marlon Brando in 1954 and adopted by the Beach Boys during the 1960s as the epitome of the California cool surf culture.

Forever cementing plaid as the uniform of rebellion, in the 1970s Punk Rockers subverted the royal tartan by symbolically ripping up the red plaid, while 1990s grunge band Nirvana sealed the deal by making the oversized plaid shirt a staple of anti fashion.

We’ve just unpacked. Come and find yours.
