The Merchants Academy has made huge strides in 2022, prioritizing skills development, job creation and tapping into the country’s huge talent pool. These are some of our proudest achievements, with more milestones in the pipeline for 2023. We are dedicated to creating a highly skilled talent pipeline in SA.

Yesterday we launched our state-of-the-art contact centre in the Jabulani precinct in Soweto, alongside AMANDLA Social Enterprises, the DBSA and the GDED. We are so proud of this initiative, which is is a direct response to a long-standing challenge in the area: a lack of sustainable employment close to home. Soweto accounts for 40% of Johannesburg’s population and suffers from 53% unemployment.

This pioneering project not only creates new jobs, but strengthens the circular economy, taps into local Small, Medium and Micro-Enterprise (SMME) services, and introduces new businesses to the growing precinct.Located behind the Jabulani Mall, this spacious new infrastructure will result in significant job creation especially for those under the age of 25 and seeks to support further opportunities for the youth of Soweto. The partnership’s key focus is to increase employment and skills development as a direct response to the country’s youth unemployment challenge. In addition, the project will support several local SMMEs as suppliers to the centre.

Each partner involved in the centre brings distinct insight, experience, and support to the project. After a year-long process, we are so proud and excited to have finally launched this project – and look forward to taking our Sisekhaya model to more township economies in the country.

We are incredibly proud of the Merchants Change a Life Warriors, who were involved in Red Bull’s Quicksand Challenge in Durban last month, taking both first and second place overall! The event featured an explosive 1600 meter race on soft sand, including artificial sand dunes – guaranteeing the athlete’s legs were on fire throughout the event. Well done to our awesome team of warriors.

Happy ! As a certified Top Gender Empowerment Company, we are proud of the work we do to develop, nurture and prioritise female talent within our organisation.

Merchants has taken home six awards in the ContactCentreWorld Global Finals. We have been voted #1 globally for Best Remote Agent Program, Best Supervisor – Tau Makoni, Best Customer Service Manager – Hlabirwa Mohlala, and Best Project Manager – Nicole Singaram. We also ranked second for Best Customer Service Professional – Kebone Thukutha. Congratulations to our exceptional team!

Last week, Merchants welcomed 20 Social Coding facilitators to a week’s training at The Capital in Menlyn to kick off a 4-month journey to full accreditation. This will allow them to better support their students in South Africa’s rural communities, as they work to drive digital inclusion in the country. We are so proud of the work that was delivered in the first week and are so excited to see them all grow throughout this process. Watch this space for updates as they move toward .
