Though he earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California and worked as a petrochemical engineer, fate had other plans โ€” a talent scout discovered him while bodybuilding in the early 1980s, leading to his first screen appearance in Diana Rossโ€™s 1982 music video โ€œMuscles.โ€

Birmingham soon dedicated himself fully to acting, studying under renowned coaches Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. He made his TV debut in 1986 with the series Riptide and later appeared in Body & Soul (2002) and Steven Spielbergโ€™s epic miniseries Into the West (2005). Audiences today know him best for roles like Billy Black in The Twilight Saga and the Texas Ranger in Hell or High Water, where he starred alongside Jeff Bridges.

With decades of diverse performances, Gil Birmingham continues to captivate audiences and honor his Native American heritage through every role he takes on.

Sam Elliott was born on August 9, 1944 in Sacramento, California, and today he rides into his 81st birthday still commanding every frame. From humble beginnings as a guestโ€‘stoic in classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and Gunsmoke (1972), he drew first blood in leading roles with Frogs (1972) and broke through as the reflective lifeguard in Lifeguard (1976).

His unforgettable turn as the driftโ€‘wood cowboy in Mask (1985) cemented his status, then he brought Louis Lโ€™Amourโ€™s legends to life in The Quick and the Dead (1987) and earned a Golden Globe nod for Conagher (1991). Veteran praise followed for Buffalo Girls (1995), Gettysburg (1993) and the enigmatic Stranger in The Big Lebowski (1998).

In recent years, Elliottโ€™s deep drawl has echoed from the Academyโ€‘nominated warmth of A Star Is Born (2018) to the gritty frontier of 1883 (2021โ€“22), winning him a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance. Heโ€™s also thrilled fans in Justified, The Ranch and The Hero.

With a Screen Actors Guild Award, a National Board of Review prize and nominations across Oscars, Golden Globes and Emmys, Sam Elliott remains the living emblem of rugged elegance and timeless storytelling. Hereโ€™s to many more rides at sunset!

CHEYENNE ARMY SCOUT at Fort Keogh, 1890. The famous illustration was by Frederic Re*****on. Lt. Edward Casey, a West Point graduate, and his Cheyenne Scouts attracted considerable national publicity. Fort Keogh, adjacent to Miles City (Montana), was built in response to Custerโ€™s 1876 Last Stand at the Little Big Horn River in Eastern Montana.

Lt. Edward Casey, while on a solo mission to ask a band of Lakota to return to reservation lands, was killed by Plenty Horses in January 1891. Nine days earlier, the 7th Cavalry had killed 250+ Natives, including many women and children, at the Wounded Knee Massacre. In some cases, unarmed non-combatants were hunted down and killed.

To provide legal grounds to prevent having Army personnel being charged with murder, Plenty Horses was found not guilty of killing Edward Casey because the judge ruled that a state of war existed. Consequently, no 7th Cavalry soldiers ever faced charges. Nineteen soldiers were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for actions at Wounded Knee. However gunfire started, the massacre was an American tragedy.

PC users can click the image for a full and sharper view. Frederic Re*****on was the best known โ€œwesternโ€ artist of his time. He illustrated many books and magazines. Re*****on excelled in illustrating animals in motion, and was more fascinated by the military than Charlie Russell. Re*****on regularly glorified the USAโ€™s westward expansion by White Euro-Americans into areas previously occupied by Natives.

Several of Re*****onโ€™s illustrations that accompanied Theodore Rooseveltโ€™s accounts of ranching in Dakota Territory precisely copied the perspective and sizing of photographs by L.A. Huffman, my favorite Old West photographer. The prints were likely supplied by Roosevelt himself. Roosevelt had met Huffman at the 1884 Stock Growers Convention in Miles City. President Roosevelt later displayed six large Huffman prints in the White House. Research and a bit of digital sharpening of image by Gary Coffrin.

GOINโ€™ TO MONTANA, 1954. Usually I post restored photos of the Old West, often those of L.A. Huffman. Occasionally a more modern image demands attention. This shot was snapped at the Perfect Instant.

Elliott Erwitt, born in 1928, was the photographer. Perhaps predictive of Facebook content, Erwitt published five volumes of photographs of dogs. Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.

Taboo Nawasha (Jaime Luis Gomez) was born on July 14, 1975, in Los Angeles. Rising to fame as the dynamic emcee of the Black Eyed Peas, he powered hits like โ€œWhere Is the Love?โ€ and โ€œMy Humpsโ€ on Grammy-winning albums Elephunk and Monkey Business, redefining early-2000s pop and hip-hop.

Beyond the stage, Tabooโ€™s 2016 anthem โ€œStand Up / Stand N Rockโ€ earned a Native American Music Award for its solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. As an ambassador for health, education, and indigenous rights, he mentors youth and champions cultural preservationโ€”continuing to inspire a new generation of artists.
