BUFFALO SKINNERS AT WORK, 1874. Buffalo robes were used by Whites as throws to keep warm and to make fur coats. Natives hunted buffalo for food and used hides for bedding, tepee covers, clothing, bags. In 1871, prices for hides skyrocketed after cheap tanning processes were developed. Driven by European demand for durable machinery belts, perhaps 10 million buffalo hides were shipped from the Southern Plains.

The 1874 photo was by George Robertson, an Austin area photographer. After 1879, the large Southern herds were gone. Five books about Montana photographer L.A. Huffman had presumed that he took the only photographs of buffalo hunters at work. However, Robertson’s historically important images pre-dated Huffman’s 1882 photos by 8 years.
