There is probably a valve on your pool equipment that nobody has turned in years.
It knows who it is. 😂

Pool systems have valves that control where water flows, and some of them may sit in the same position for a very long time. The problem is that parts sitting outside in the Florida weather do not always enjoy being ignored forever.

Valves can become stiff. Handles can weaken. Seals can age. Fittings can corrode. And the day you finally need something to move is a terrible time to discover that it no longer wants to.

This is why routine equipment checks matter even when everything seems to be working perfectly. Most pool equipment problems do not wake up one morning and announce themselves with a formal letter.

They usually start small.
A drip.
A little corrosion.
A strange noise.
A valve getting harder to turn.
A crack that was not there last year.

Paying attention to the boring little stuff around the pool can save you from some very exciting repair bills later.

And when it comes to pool equipment, boring is good. 😄

When was the last time you actually LOOKED at your pool equipment pad?

Not walked past it.
Not heard it running.
Actually looked at it. 😄

Pool equipment lives outside in Florida heat, rain and humidity, so fittings, connections, pipes and metal components can all show signs of wear over time.
A little rust, a tiny drip or some corrosion around a connection may not seem urgent, but those are exactly the kinds of things worth noticing early.

Look for water where there should not be water.

Listen for sounds that suddenly seem different.

Notice rust, corrosion, loose fittings or anything that simply looks different than it did before.

You do not have to know what every piece of equipment does. That’s our job.
But spotting a change early can sometimes keep a small repair from becoming a much bigger one.

And then there are the valves. Oh, the valves. Tomorrow we need to talk about that one valve nobody has touched since approximately 2022. 😂

That little crack in the pool deck? Keep an eye on it.

Most pool owners pay attention to the water first, which makes sense. If the pool is blue and sparkling, life is good. 😄 But the deck around the pool is quietly taking a beating from sun, heat, rain, ground movement and years of use. A small crack may stay small for a long time. Or it may start widening, lifting or creating an uneven spot that becomes more than just cosmetic.

This is one of those things that is easy to walk past every day and think, “I’ll deal with that eventually.” Eventually has a funny way of getting more expensive. 😂

Take a walk around your pool every now and then and actually look at the deck. Watch for cracks that are growing, areas that are lifting, loose material or spots where water seems to collect.

Your pool is more than the water in the middle.

Tomorrow, we’re heading over to the equipment pad, where some very important things live that almost nobody looks at until something stops working.

“Can we just keep the pool at 86?”

Of course.

Your utility company would like to thank you for your business. 😂

Here’s the part people don’t always realize: going from 80° to 86° isn’t just six innocent little degrees.

The warmer you keep the pool compared with the air around it, the more heat it continually loses. Your heater doesn't simply get the water to 86 and retire for the day. It has to keep replacing the heat escaping from the pool.

And evaporation is a big part of that heat loss.

That’s also why there really isn’t one truthful answer to, “How much does it cost to heat my pool?”

It depends on the size of the pool, heater type, outside temperature, wind, desired water temperature, whether the pool is covered and your local electric, natural gas or propane rate.

An 80° pool and an 86° pool can be two very different heating bills.

If warm water is important to you, absolutely enjoy it. That’s what the pool is there for.

Just know that every time you bump that thermostat higher, your heater may be thinking:

“Excellent. Overtime.” 😆

Heat pump or gas heater?

They both make the pool warmer, but they have very different personalities. 😄

A heat pump pulls heat from the surrounding air and transfers it into the pool water. Florida's relatively mild climate makes that a good fit for a lot of pools. Heat pumps are generally more economical to operate, but they take their sweet time getting the water warm.

Think crockpot.

A gas heater, using natural gas or propane, can raise the temperature much faster and works well when you want heat on demand.

Think blowtorch. 😂

The trade-off is fuel consumption. Gas gives you speed, but that speed can come with a noticeably higher operating cost.

So which is better?

It depends on how you use your pool.

If you like maintaining a comfortable temperature for longer periods, a heat pump may make more sense. If you mostly want to say, “We’re having people over Saturday, make the pool warm,” gas may be worth the faster heat-up.

And then there’s the thermostat.

Tomorrow we need to have a little chat about 86 degrees. 😬

Anybody else notice the pool suddenly feels COLD? 🥶

This is one of my favorite Florida fall tricks.

The afternoon temperature is still in the 80s, so you walk outside thinking, “Perfect pool day!” Then you put one foot in the water and immediately reconsider your plans. 😆

As our nights get cooler and the days get shorter, pool water starts losing some of the heat Mother Nature was providing for free all summer.

That’s usually when we start getting questions about pool heaters.

And the first thing to know is that heating a pool is very different from heating a spa. You’re heating thousands and thousands of gallons of water, outdoors, while the air around it is constantly trying to steal that heat back.

So yes, you absolutely can extend your Florida swimming season.

But before you decide you want the pool at a lovely 86 degrees all winter, we need to talk. 😂

Next up: heat pump or gas heater? They both heat the pool, but they do it VERY differently.

By fall, you may not be using the pool quite as much.

The pool, unfortunately, did not receive that memo. 😄

It still has water circulating through equipment. It still collects debris. The chemistry still changes. Algae is still more than happy to move in if given the opportunity, because apparently algae has no seasonal hobbies.

And Florida weather certainly doesn’t help. One week can give us blazing sun, cooler nights, heavy rain and temperatures that make absolutely no sense together.

That’s why regular testing, brushing, cleaning and equipment checks still matter this time of year. Fall pool care in Florida is less about “closing the pool” and more about adjusting to what Mother Nature is throwing at it this particular week.

Keep it clean. Keep the water balanced. Keep everything circulating.

Then when one of those beautiful 80-degree October Saturdays rolls around, your pool is ready.

Because around here, swimming season isn’t really over. It just gets slightly confused. 🍂🏊‍♀️😄

Apparently, the trees know when it’s fall. 🍂

Your pool may be the first place you notice.

Leaves, little twigs, seeds, pollen and assorted mystery debris start finding their way into the water. And because this is Florida, we can throw in an afternoon storm just to stir everything up and make things interesting.

All of that debris does more than make the pool look messy. It can fill baskets faster, put more demand on the filtration system and give your sanitizer extra work to do.

So this time of year, keeping an eye on the skimmer and pump baskets becomes especially important. A pool full of leaves is annoying. A basket packed so tightly that water can’t move properly is a different problem altogether.

And no, the answer is not to give the pump a fall vacation. 😆

Tomorrow we’ll talk about why Florida pools still need plenty of attention even when swimming season starts slowing down.

Fall is almost here! 🍂

Well... according to the calendar.

The temperature is still somewhere around “why did I bother doing my hair,” the pool is still perfectly swimmable, and we may or may not have another tropical system keeping an eye on us.

But even our Florida version of fall brings some changes to your pool. The days are getting a little shorter, the angle and intensity of the sun are changing, and eventually we’ll start getting those cooler nights mixed in with our 90-degree afternoons.

Your pool notices seasonal changes even when the rest of us are still wearing shorts.

This week, we’re talking about what “fall” actually means for a Florida pool, because putting a pumpkin on the front porch does not magically put the pool to bed. 🎃😄

Next up: the trees have apparently gotten the fall memo, even if the thermometer hasn’t.

Twenty five years.

Today we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the firefighters, police officers, and everyday people who showed the country what courage looks like.

We are grateful for those who serve and protect our communities. Never forget.
