A chemist from Milledgeville is a large part of why the South still has pine forests and a paper industry. 🌲

Charles Holmes Herty was born in 1867, studied chemistry at the University of Georgia, and took his doctorate at Johns Hopkins. In 1901 he was watching turpentine crews hack deep boxes into living longleaf pines, a method that bled a tree until it died or the wind took it down. He designed a clay cup and a metal gutter that caught the resin without killing the tree, and the naval stores industry survived because of it.

Then in the worst of the Depression he took on the northern paper mills, who insisted southern pine was far too resinous to make newsprint. Herty proved otherwise in a Savannah laboratory, and on March 31, 1933 the Soperton News printed an edition on paper made from young Georgia pine. Fifteen pulp and paper mills went up across the South over the next seven years. He died in 1938.

A massive thank you to everyone who joined us for this morning’s Waycross-Ware County Chamber of Commerce September Rise and Shine!

We had a great turnout of community leaders and professionals coming together for some fantastic networking. A special shoutout to Red Owl Coffee Company for fueling our morning with delicious coffee, and to Ware County Schools and Waycross Middle School for hosting our monthly meeting and sharing a delicious breakfast with us all. We would also like to thank principal David Hitt for your warm hospitality and giving us an exclusive tour of the brand-new school facilities.

It was wonderful to hear exciting updates from Ware County Schools and see firsthand the incredible investments being made in our students' futures!
