The Black Hawk County America250 Celebration could use your help in volunteering or recruiting other groups and individuals to volunteer! Now we need to prepare the field in downtown Waterloo for each of 1,776 flags that will be displayed from July 3 - 5, 2026. Here is the link to volunteer (see attached flier): https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0B4DABAA22A7F85-64346794-field. This event is sponsored by the Exchange Clubs of the Cedar Valley, Americans for Independent Living Veterans Resource Center, Main Street Waterloo and the City of Waterloo.
We also encourage you and your family to visit the field. The event begins with a procession of 500 flags across the 4th and 5th Street Bridges on Friday, July 3 at 9 am, with a public program beginning at 10 am and again at 10 am on Saturday and Sunday at Veterans Hall. Closing ceremonies are planned at 1:45 pm on Sunday, July 5. The field is open from dawn to dusk each day.
Each day of public programming is themed and will feature speakers and patriotic music:
Day 1 (July 3) – “Founding of a Nation” -- focuses on celebrating the anniversary of our country and the Declaration of Independence.
Day 2 (July 4) – “The Strength of a Nation” -- focuses on honoring our veterans and their families, first responders and community volunteers.
Day 3 (July 5) – “The Future of Our Nation” -- focuses on the future with an emphasis on youth. Closing ceremonies are set for Sunday, July 5 at 1:45 p.m.
Flag(s) may still be purchased in honor or memory of a hero, veteran, active-duty service member, first responder, or loved one. Each sponsored flag will be displayed in the Field of Honor, and sponsors may keep their flag as a keepsake after the event. Cost is $50 each. An order form is attached.
