I gotta tell you I haven’t heard anything about why I should vote for Josh Turek. All I see are surrogates sh****ng on Zach Wahls. Let’s be clear it’s not policy differences, it’s personal and dirty. Some one’s gonna win in June. But I gotta tell you one side is spending a lot of time building hard feelings that’ll make it hard to vote in November for their guy.

Well at least we’re saying the quiet parts out loud now. As many of us have known the ESA program in Iowa was never about school choice. It was about subsidizing segregation. It’s very clear from the language that they don’t want parents choosing where to send their kids, but schools choosing students who make them look good. Fact of the matter is this if you accept public money to run a school you should have to run like a public school. You take public money you take the public, not just whoever fits your mold. If your school doesn’t want to do that, fair, fine, you just don’t get any public money. Our public schools are doing amazing work with students who come from so many different backgrounds. If private schools can’t handle educating every child, they shouldn’t get handed everyone’s money.

Edited: I have now received responses from all of the City Council and Mayor.

This is the email I sent to the Mayor and City Council of Waterloo. I will post any and all replies I receive.

“I am writing today in support of fully funding the Grout Museum. The Grout is an important center of learning and heritage in our community. It preserves the voices of our elders and honors the deep commitment of our veterans. Since the early 2000s citizen of Waterloo have overwhelmingly supported a local levy to fund the Grout. In 2023 the state abolished that levy. But it did not abolish the deep need we have to remember Waterloo’s history. I write because it has been reported that the City of Waterloo was looking to cut 20% of the Grout’s budget. This was also an option on the budget simulator pushed out by the city. Budgets are difficult but they should not be balanced on the backs of our children and veterans. Please do the right thing and fully fund the Grout.”

Grout Museum District faces funding cuts as city grapples with budget deficit 03/26/2026

Incredibly disappointing that the City Council and Mayor are thinking of cutting an essential center for learning and history. We’ve already had to close the children’s museum in Waterloo. Apparently ensuring that kids have space to learn, honoring our veterans and preserving the history of our community is too expensive.

There’s always enough money to bomb schools, but never enough money to fund them at home. There’s always enough money to cut taxes for the wealthiest, but never enough to feed and house those in need. There’s always enough money to bail out banks and businesses, but never enough to help folks afford health care or college. Fundamentally our system does not work. And that’s a problem.

Waterloo council tables agreement change, temporarily stalls City Hall move 03/04/2026

I'll be watching to see if the mayor and his allies on council will show as much concern for a potential multi million dollar lawsuit over property as they were about a potential lawsuit over an effort to protect children from torture.

We heard a lot about how city government should be more efficient, smaller and that we need to save money. But after Friday we’ve seen what that gets us. Barely usable roads, ice still covering too many places and making travel to work and school difficult and potentially dangerous. The role of government is to provide services. That's not what we saw over the last few days. If this is already the result, what other poor quality services can we expect from their promise to cut taxes?
