in 1963, Fannie Lou Hamer and her fellow activists were arrested in Winona, Mississippi, after returning from a voter registration workshop. They had been riding in the "white" section of a Greyhound bus.

In jail, police ordered incarcerated men to beat the women. Hamer spent more than a month recovering from her injuries.
