ITE seeks jurors for the 2026 ITE Safe System Approach Student Video Competition.

Jurors will help encourage the next generation of transportation professionals while seeing how students apply the Safe System Approach to real transportation challenges, including how they assess kinetic energy risk through exposure, severity, and likelihood. It is also an opportunity to connect with others interested in transportation safety and exchange perspectives on how Safe System principles can be applied in practice.

Jurors will review and score student videos using the attached rubric, including:
-Safe System Alignment
-Critical Thinking and Student Perspective
-Creativity and Engagement
-Content Clarity and Accuracy
-Production Quality

The deadline to apply is October 19. Judge selection will take place in November. Judging and scoring will be in December.

Transportation professionals with experience in transportation safety and the Safe System Approach are encouraged to apply. Send a one-page statement of interest and a resume to [email protected].

E-bikes, e-scooters, cargo e-bikes, and other electric micromodes can expand transportation choices, extend the reach of public transportation, and replace some automobile trips—but they also introduce new considerations for transportation professionals.

ITE’s new technical brief, Electric Micromodes: Opportunities and Challenges for Transportation Planning, examines the planning, design, operational, accessibility, and safety issues associated with these increasingly common modes. The brief addresses device classifications, infrastructure and parking needs, lithium-ion battery safety, planning approaches, and policies and programs that can support responsible e-micromode use.

It's National Roundabouts Week! ITE will be recognizing roundabout projects from our public agency members.

The purpose of the Teri Road at Pleasant Valley Road roundabout project in Austin, TX was to address right angle crashes and provided protected bicycle lanes and pedestrian crossings through an intersection with high multi-modal demand.

The intersection was a four-way stop-controlled intersection with four lanes on both Teri Road and Pleasant Valley Road. The location had deficiencies in ADA-compliant pedestrian infrastructure, lighting, and safety. The Teri Road at Pleasant Valley Road roundabout is the first protected roundabout in Texas.

This design reviewed bicycle design speeds and ensured adequate space for bicycle and pedestrian crossings, which allow for bicycles with trailers to stop in the splitter island for two stage crossing.

ITE members can learn more about this and roundabout projects in September's ITE Journal. This project was awarded the 2026 TexITE – ITE Texas District Norman Hogue Roundabout of the Year Award.
