APA|DC is the Washington, D.C. chapter of American Photographic Artists– an organization run by and for professional photographers.
If you would like to post a story that you think would be relevant to the page, please email an administrator and we'll try to get it up right away.
APA | DC invites you to special evening to preview an excerpt from the upcoming documentary, “Art Shay: An America So Real.”
Directed and produced by first-time filmmakers Ken Hanson and Jack Davidson, along with editor and producer Dave Myszewski, the feature-length documentary introduces audiences to photojournalist, Art Shay. Over a remarkable career spanning seven decades, Shay photographed everyone from presidents, celebrities, sports legends and cultural icons to the everyday life of 20th century America. Yet, despite his work appearing on hundreds of covers of major publications including Life, Look, Time, Saturday Evening Post, Forbes and others, he remains relatively unknown outside his hometown Chicago.
The evening’s highlights will include:
A special exhibition and silent auction of signed photographs by Art Shay, and other renowned photographers to help finance the completion of the film
A 24-minute sneak peak of the film
A conversation with Director/Producer Ken Hanson
This film is more than a biography—it’s a story about courage and compassion. It’s a portrait of an artist, the son of Russian immigrants, who believed so strongly in the promise of America that he fought for it during World War II—and for the rest of his life on the streets, with his camera. Art Shay’s work speaks to our current times in profound ways and continues to influence a new generation of photojournalists.
Please join us at EOD Studio DC - Washington, DC Photo Studio on August 24th from 6-8PM
Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
