The 2025 Kakehashi Project will run from December 10 - 17, 2025. This year's cohort will be comprised of 48 participants who will travel to Japan to deepen their understanding of Japan's economy, society, history, diverse culture, politics, and diplomatic policies through people-to-people exchanges. Participants are expected to play an active and important role in the future of U.S.-Japan relations. We will also be accepting applications for two chaperones!
Participants of the trip must be between the ages of 18 and 27 years old and of Japanese American ancestry or adopted by a Japanese American family. All participants who attend will be required to be up to date with COVID-19 vaccines, including the most recent booster, before trip departure. Due to budget constraints, the attendance fee for this year's trip has increased. For more information or to apply, click HERE.
Applications will close on Saturday, September 20 at 11:59 pm HST.
The JACL Kakehashi Program is coordinated by the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) and the Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE), and supported by funding from the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Recently, a new directive was issued from the administration’s executive order, “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” followed by a memorandum by the Secretary of the US Department of the Interior, and subsequent instructions from the National Park Service comptroller. These directives require national park superintendents to identify and flag signs, exhibits, films, and other public-facing content that are deemed to “disparage US history.” Collectively, they form part of the administration’s broader, ongoing campaign to dismantle foundational principles of diversity and democracy, suppress historical narratives that challenge their preferred version of events, and erase the contributions of people of color, women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and other marginalized communities from the American story.
The widespread dismantling of federal agencies that support the community’s work and the attempts at the wholesale erasure of history will not help us achieve a more just America. The implications stretch far beyond America’s historical sites and parks, which is why we must continue to challenge revisionist history and other threats to democracy immediately.
Join us for a Day of Action to defend the truth of WWIl Japanese American incarceration history. Hear from WWIl incarceration survivors, community activists, and allies to honor the people and places that shaped our history and demand that this injustice never happens again.
