PSW Science is a leading science education organization in Washington, DC. Founded in 1871 as the P Election to membership is by the General Committee.
PSW grew out of meetings that were held Saturday afternoons in the middle of the Nineteenth century in the home of Joseph Henry, an early researcher in magnetism and the discoverer of electromagnetic self-induction. On April 24, 2026, at the 2,535th meeting of the Philosophical Society of Washington, Harris Lewin of Arizona State University presented a lecture titled “The Earth BioGenome Project: Reading the Library of Life.”
During the lecture, Dr. Lewin discussed the ambitious goal of the Earth BioGenome Project (EBP): to characterize and map the genomes of approximately 1.6 million known eukaryotic species within the next decade.
He highlighted the project’s progress to date, noting that the EBP has produced more than 5,600 genomes, with over 4,000 meeting the standard for “high-quality reference genomes.”

On April 10, 2026, at the 2,534th meeting of the Philosophical Society of Washington, Kelly Fast of NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office delivered a compelling lecture titled “Finding Asteroids Before They Find Us.”
The talk highlighted critical efforts to search for near-Earth objects, track and characterize potentially hazardous asteroids, and develop strategies to mitigate impact risks. As emphasized during the lecture: “This is a natural disaster that we could potentially do something about.”

On March 6, 2026, at the 2,532nd meeting of the Philosophical Society of Washington, Jonathan Coopersmith (Texas A&M University) delivered a fascinating lecture on “Robert Goddard and the Invention of the Liquid-Fueled Rocket.” 🚀
The talk explored the historic 1926 launch of the first liquid-fueled rocket—an achievement that helped launch the modern era of rocketry. It also highlighted Goddard’s groundbreaking technical contributions and recognized the important role his wife, Esther Goddard, played in preserving and promoting his legacy.

On February 20, 2026, at the 2,531st meeting of the Philosophical Society of Washington, Karen Lloyd of the University of Southern California presented a lecture entitled:
Intraterrestrials: The Strangest Life on Earth
During the lecture, Professor Lloyd discussed the discovery and study of a remarkable class of organisms found living deep within seabed sediments around the world. These organisms—referred to as “intraterrestrials” or “Aeonophiles”appear to survive for extraordinarily long periods, potentially tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years.
The lecture explored how these ultra-slow-living microbes challenge conventional assumptions about biology, energy use, and the limits of life on Earth.
