Child Labor 06/12/2026

DYK? Worldwide, an estimated 160 million children engage in .

Child labor in is among the worst forms of child labor, and Pact is dedicated to ending this in communities where we work.

In partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor, we recently launched the Madini Safi program in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Madini Safi, which means “Fair Minerals” in Swahili, brings together Congolese communities, government, and industry to eliminate child and forced labor from cobalt, copper, and 3T supply chains in DRC and expand fair access to minerals for U.S. companies.

Pact’s approach to ending child labor is locally-led and built on two decades of experience in responsible mining. In partnership with those we serve, we have made progress in communities in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

As U.S. foreign assistance is consolidated into the State Department, the biggest question we face is whether this new structure will strengthen or weaken global development.

In a new Policy Commentary for the Modernizing Foreign Assistance Network (MFAN), our CEO, Dennis Vega, writes that for all of its faults, the prior system preserved a critical, productive tension between the State Department and USAID, and consolidation now risks eliminating this.

Dennis shares concrete recommendations for making consolidation work. He argues that we still have an opportunity to get this right, and the future of U.S. foreign assistance depends on it.
