Google Turns Old Phones Into Cloud Servers
That old phone buried in your drawer? Google says it's not done working yet.
Here's the idea: Google teamed up with researchers at UC San Diego to strip old, retired Pixel phones down to nothing but their motherboards β no screen, no battery, no camera. Just the chip, memory, and storage.
Then they flash those boards with Linux, wire 25 to 50 of them together into a "cluster," and let them run real cloud computing tasks β basically turning a pile of dead phones into a working server.
Sounds wild, but it checks out. Modern phone chips are so powerful that, core for core, they can match or beat the processors inside real data center servers. Google just seems to be the first to ask, "wait, why are we throwing these away?"
It's already working, too. A test cluster of just 20 old phones handled grading and coursework for 75+ university students β and was actually faster than some regular commercial cloud services. π
Next stop: 2,000 retired Pixel phones, clustered together this fall at UC San Diego. That's roughly the computing power of 50 full servers, built almost entirely from e-waste, at a fraction of the cost.
And the "low-carbon" part is the real win. A phone's motherboard accounts for the biggest chunk of its environmental footprint β so reusing it instead of manufacturing a brand-new server saves real emissions, not just money.
Moral of the story: that "useless" phone in your drawer might just be a data center waiting to happen. β»οΈ

First Fully Autonomous AI Ransomware Attack Security researchers just documented the first real-world case of fully autonomous, agentic ransomware β nicknamed "JadePuffer." The AI agent handled reconnaissance, credential theft, and lateral movement entirely on its own, adapting to failures in real time. AI just crossed a line it can't uncross. π Does this change how worried you are about AI + cybersecurity? π
