Historic rainfall. Real-world impacts.

Last night much of eastern Nebraska experienced an extraordinary rainfall event, with preliminary reports indicating that portions of the region exceeded a 100-year rainfall event. Lincoln officially recorded 6.15 inches of rain on September 30 — the wettest single day on record — with some areas receiving even greater amounts.

For our team today has been busy. The phones have been ringing as communities, property owners and project partners assess flooding, high water and impacts to infrastructure across the region.

Events of this magnitude put tremendous stress on dams, drainage systems, culverts, detention facilities, waterways and other infrastructure — often in a matter of hours.

Much of water resources engineering is about planning and designing for events we hope rarely happen. When a 100-year rainfall event occurs, the importance of that planning becomes very real, very quickly.

Our thoughts are with the communities, property owners and emergency personnel dealing with flooding and damage throughout the region today.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT | Pine Lake Dam Rehabilitation

We’re proud to have been part of the Pine Lake Dam Rehabilitation Project in Lincoln, Nebraska.

This project included significant improvements to the existing dam and surrounding infrastructure, including reconstruction of the dam embankment, replacement of the principal spillway and concrete riser, installation of a new impact basin and outlet protection, construction of a sand filter and drainage system, sanitary sewer replacement, roadway reconstruction, and site restoration.

The comprehensive rehabilitation was designed to improve the long-term performance, safety, and reliability of the Pine Lake Dam while upgrading critical infrastructure serving the surrounding community.

Projects like this require careful coordination across excavation, concrete construction, underground utilities, drainage, roadway work, and final site restoration—and it’s rewarding to see all of those pieces come together.

Check out the photos from the completed project below. It’s always great to see a project through to completion!

Render to Reality

At Hazard Engineering, our in-house design process includes detailed, realistic 3D renders that bridge the gap between blueprint and reality. It's not just a pretty picture — it's a precision tool. Our renders help clients make confident decisions early, give builders a clear visual target, and eliminate costly surprises mid-construction.

If you have a project on the horizon — commercial, agricultural, or industrial — let's start with the vision.

Machine control systems — calibrated, localized, and ready to work.

Our team was on-site this week finalizing GPS calibration to project control points and loading project files directly into the machine. When the blade hits the ground, the data is already there.

This is part of what we do at Hazard Engineering — not just the design, but making sure the technology in the field is dialed in and performing the way it should.

Career Day
This week we stopped at the intermediate school in Valparaiso for career day. Getting in front of 3rd–5th graders and talking about what it looks like to build a career — and a business — was a reminder of why we do what we do.
The students were sharp and engaged, and we left inspired. Here’s to the next generation of problem-solvers.

Roadways within a development do more than provide access.

They shape traffic flow, influence safety, and impact how a site functions every day. From site access design to internal circulation, each decision affects long-term performance.

Before structures rise, the groundwork must be right.

Balanced grading, coordinated utilities, and accurate layout set the foundation for everything that follows.

Stormwater detention basins may not be the most visible part of a project, but they play a major role in how a site performs during heavy rainfall.

Proper detention basin design helps control runoff, protect downstream infrastructure, and meet stormwater compliance requirements.
