During the United States' involvement in World War II, the U.S. Mint sought alternative materials to strike coins, because copper, tin, and nickel were crucial to the war effort. The Mint commissioned private firms to experiment with different materials. In this case, plastic!!! The coins produced in this campaign are made from many materials, including plastic, rubber, and even glass!

The reasoning for the lack of a denomination was that these were intended to be experimental. This is similar to J-2180, which was struck in 1982 and tested the new zinc alloy for the cent denomination.

With bright, radiant luster and original toning, this Vermont, half dollar is as original as it gets! These pieces were struck to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Bennington, an American victory that weakened British forces leading up to the Battles of Saratoga.

Since the 1870's, the origin of the Capped Bust Quarters bearing the "E" and "L" counterstrikes has confounded many numismatists. They are found on both 1815 and 1825-dated pieces. There are many theories of their origin. One of the more interesting theories holds that they were placed by the Harmony Society commune in Pennsylvania around 1832. This society was a German-American Christian communal society founded by George Rapp (1757-1847). Their economic arrangement was strict, ordering members to surrender their individual property to the society. This theory of the "E" and "L" counterstamps suggests they intended to divide wealth between two competing factions.

There are, however, other theories. For instance, a School Prize for "English" or "Latin."

After gaining control of the Philippines in 1898, it would take until 1903 for the U.S. to pass a coinage act and begin producing U.S. Philippine coinage. From 1903 to 1908, the Philadelphia Mint was the sole provider of Philippine proof sets. The U.S. Mint produced 1,355 Philippine proof sets in 1904. These sets were wrapped in tissue paper and placed within a standard paper envelope. This subpar storage lowered the survival rate of Gem Proofs. With rich toning and stellar luster, this example showcases the best of what you can find from that original packaging.

A surprise from the U.S. Mint! Within an Advanced Delivery roll of these new issues, a senior numismatist at Heritage Auctions, Rene Alvarenga, has discovered an unannounced "July 4th" privy coin. Heritage Auctions is kindly donating this discovery piece to the American Numismatic Association (ANA). These coins will be officially released by the U.S. Mint in limited numbers, alongside the standard, non-privy issues, on September 2nd for dealers and collectors alike.

This label, with our new Eagle-inlay holder, is hand signed by Ron Drzewucki, President of CAC Grading.
