Although you assume responsibility for confronting someone when their behavior causes you a problem, it is ultimately up to them whether to change or not. Because you have the problem, you are in fact dependent on them to change.

I-Messages effectively and accurately communicate this attitude — it is a statement of your problem but doesn't tell the changee s/he must change or how s/he must change.
