While most spiders in East Texas are harmless and actually help control insects, two species deserve extra attention: the Brown Recluse and the Black Widow.

Brown Recluse spiders prefer dark, undisturbed areas where they can hide during the day. Common hiding spots include: attics, storage boxes, closets and workshops.
These spiders are not aggressive and typically bite only when trapped against skin, such as when putting on stored clothing, shoes, or gloves.

Black Widows are commonly found outdoors around: sheds, fences, outdoor furniture, boxes and crawl spaces.
Female Black Widows are recognized by their shiny black bodies and distinctive red hourglass marking underneath the abdomen. They build irregular, tangled webs close to the ground and generally stay hidden during daylight hours.
