Thank you WFRV Local 5 for visiting and sharing the story of our new exhibit - "Set In Type."
This project is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Long before messages could go viral online, they had to be set one letter at a time. Created in honor of America’s 250th anniversary, ‘Set in Type’ explores the role printing played in spreading information during the country’s founding.

"Set In Type" tells the story of how the printed word helped shape civic life in America. Through the history of Hamilton Manufacturing this exhibition shows how wood type and printing innovation changed the way people shared information across the country.
The objects in this gallery are more than printing tools and posters. They tell the story of how print helped people stay informed, gather together, and take part in their communities. From public notices to entertainment posters, the printed word helped shape everyday life in America.
Every print in this exhibition was hand printed by the staff and volunteers of Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum using historic presses, wood type, and original printing plates. Inspired by America's 250th anniversary, they selected images, type, and printing techniques that reflect the people, events, and ideas that have shaped our nation.
This project is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.
"Set In Type" will be on display through December 2026.

As the Indianapolis 500 celebrates speed, precision, and American innovation, we’re reminded that print shops and race shops share a common spirit — craftsmanship, engineering, and creativity in motion.
