On this prominent point of land, a major threat to navigation on Lake Michigan's western shore, Rawley Point Lighthouse was erected in 1894 and is the only one of its kind on the Great Lakes. The tower is a reconstruction and enlargement of an old Chicago River lighthouse that was transported to this location. We're coming upon tourist season so I'm sending out a reminder to all that the Lighthouse grounds are off limits to the general public. It is an active aid to navigation and also a recreation facility for military families. The lighthouse can be viewed from the boardwalk and beach by the public but please remember to respect the privacy of the personnel using the facility.
