Family grown pecans since 1986. The farm encompasses 300 acres of flat bottomland along Polecat Creek, ideally suited for pecan agriculture.
Knight Pecan Farms is a family owned and operated pecan orchard in Creek County, Oklahoma, a twenty minute drive Southwest of Tulsa. Bob & Peggy Knight bought the land in the mid 1980s and set about making improvements, including construction of a large irrigation pond and planting rows of paper-shell trees to complement the existing native trees. The Knights sold their pecans at a private store in Jenks beginning in 1986 up until a fire destroyed the building in 1997. Afterwards, they retailed their pecans through Conrad Farms in Bixby, a relationship which continued until 2013 when Conrad Farms fell to urban land pressure and decided to close down. In November of 2013, Knight Creek Farms rebuilt their nut shop on the site of the one that burned down and opened its doors once again to the public. Close to Tulsa Hills Shopping Center and City of Jenks, the new shop has received an enthusiastic welcome from both Tulsa and Regional pecan buyers. The shop is open in November, December and January. They also sell our pecans at the Tulsa Farmers Market in the summer on Saturdays from 7 until 11 am. The Knights now care for over three thousand pecan trees and oversee all phases of the production process, from planting to irrigating, fertilizing, managing insects and blight, mowing, pruning, shaking, harvesting, cleaning, inspecting, drying and sacking the finished product. We work closely with researchers at Oklahoma State University to ensure use of the best practices in pecan horticulture and environmental management. Bob Knight is a current President of the Oklahoma Pecan Growers Association and twice recipient of the Grower of the Year award. After over thirty five years in business, the second generation of Knight farmers is carrying on the passion for growing top quality pecans.

Pecans are getting close to being ripe. Notice the white on the end of the pecan on the right. That means it’s not ripened yet. Where it’s attached to the tree will turn brown when it’s ready.

Did you know that pecans should be kept refrigerated or frozen for freshness? If you don’t plan on eating pecans within a couple of weeks, pop them in the refrigerator or freezer. They also make for a nice cold snack. Since they do have a high oil content, pecans don’t freeze solid. It helps preserve their freshness, and they last a long time.

We got some rain Sunday morning and more in the forecast this week. The guys have been busy getting all the mowing done and getting all the machinery ready for the harvest season. It’s getting close! Who’s ready for pecan season?

Getting ready for the harvest. Not only are the guys out in the field making sure everything is cleaned and checking the trees, but we’re gearing up inside for stocking the store and for shipping. These are the amount of boxes we go through in a year. We already put up boxes of the bags that we pack the pecans in. Now to put away these pallets and wait on the next shipment.

We’ve added some new machinery that will hopefully help harvest. Our new flail mower is being out to work. Our large brush hogs will still be used throughout the year, and the flail mower will be used right before harvest. They both have their place. The batwing brush hogs cut larger path, and we can get a lot done in a short time. The flail mower has all these little knives that cut the grass shorter, and also chops up that grass into smaller pieces. Long grass gets caught in the harvester and clogs it up, making it take a little longer to clear it up. The flail mower also has the roller on the back of it that helps smooth the land. It helps to smooth out some of the little holes or ruts that are left in the tree rows. Nuts fall into those holes and don’t get harvested Hopefully, with smoother ground, we’ll lose less pecans during harvest. Always making some progress on the farm.
