Bike Club
Building confident cyclists and great Tulsans through community engagement. Our kid-centered program started with a few like-minded people. Mike."
People who were passionate and understood the power of bicycles. In 2008, Jason Whorton began building and giving kids free bikes through his 501(c)3 non-profit Humble Sons Bike Company. Whorton's initial efforts consisted of giving away 22 bikes. He has since overseen the distribution of over 17,000 bicycles. His program was growing at an exponential rate. It’s Bike Club Rally week!!!
This Wednesday, May 13th, over 500 Bike Club students will ride their bikes from Hardesty National BMX stadium in downtown Tulsa to Gathering Place using city streets and the River Parks east bank trail. If you want to cheer on these young riders they’ll be rolling westbound on Archer then southbound on Denver just after 11:00am! Expect some delays during this timeframe as intersections are temporarily blocked for safe passage of the riders, but our friends at Tulsa Police Department do an incredible job of keeping things flowing! Thank you Tulsa Fire Department for the wonderful station tours this spring! It is truly a highlight of our clubs’ seasons getting to ride to their neighborhood station and learn about fire safety and what it’s like to be a firefighter. ❤️🚒🚲

Last Friday a crew of incredible volunteers built 190 bikes, greatly exceeding our expectations for the day! If you want to get in on the action, you’re in luck because we have about 130 more bikes to build this Friday, May 8th starting at 10:00 AM at Bike Club HQ - 5737 S. Union Ave.
We’ll go until 4:00 PM if we need to, but we expect to wrap up before then. No tools or experience required!

Spring in Bike Club means ADVENTURE! After building up our skills and confidence by completing Bike Club lessons, riding on campus and in our school’s neighborhoods, we venture out to explore, learn, exercise, and have FUN in our communities. These kinds of rides and memories are happening every day across the district at 39 Bike Club schools.

Last weekend, we opened the doors to Bike Club Headquarters – a 15,000 sq ft purpose-built space years in the making and the result of months of dedicated construction. We welcomed funders and partners for tours, hosted more than 200 volunteers and guests for an evening cookout (many of whom have been with us for over a decade), and even served as the starting point for the sold-out Tulsa Trek 10-mile hike with our friends at Tulsa Parks.
This moment feels like turning the first page of a much bigger story. We’re energized by what’s ahead and excited to use this space to get more kids on bikes and in ways we may not have even imagined yet. Stay tuned for opportunities to learn, give back, and connect in a space built for community.
This project was made possible by the generosity of the William S. Smith Charitable Trust, Sanford and Irene Burnstein Family Foundation, The Helmerich Trust, J.E. & L.E. Mabee Foundation, George Kaiser Family Foundation, Ascension St. John, Morningcrest Healthcare Foundation, The Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation, The H.A. & Mary K. Chapman Foundation, Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies, Kalkman Family Charitable Trust, Darryl & Julie Christner Family Foundation, Wozniak, Gustine, and Harris families, and dozens of individual donors.
Our new headquarters is part of a broader effort to revitalize Cecille Bales Park. Recent improvements across the park include the Noah Jaguars Baseball sportsplex, 9-miles of multi-use trails within the Mooser Creek Greenway system, and inclusive play options at the new Hope Playground at Bales.

Be the peanut butter to our jelly!
Our after-school Bike Clubs learn to ride safely in pairs (or side by side, two by two, etc) for their off-campus adventures and many clubs could use more adult volunteers to ride with them this spring. Learn more about Bike Club and sign up to volunteer at www.bikeclubtulsa.com

We always say "the more, the merrier" when it comes to volunteers at after-school clubs, but we do have some sites that are in higher need than others to keep student-to-adult ratios at least 4:1 for safe off-campus rides. A few of these clubs are small but only have 1 (or none) active volunteers in addition to a faculty sponsor, and a few are very large clubs that just need more adults for off-campus rides. If you are available to help or can spread the word about volunteering with a club, these are top priorities. Bike Club Rocks!
Addresses in comments, general area, and meeting day listed below. Clubs meet immediately after school, most are ~3:00pm-4:30pm once per week.
