After a hailstorm, take a walk around your home and look for:

Cracked or split siding
Dents in gutters, downspouts, or vents
Damaged window screens
Granule loss on shingles
Impact marks on garage doors or trim

Hail damage does not look like a hole in your roof.

In these photos, the chalk marks show areas where hail impacted the shingles. The actual damage is where the protective granules have been knocked loose or the shingle mat underneath has been bruised.

Those granules are important. They protect the asphalt layer from sun, heat, and weather. When hail knocks them off, the shingle can age faster, dry out, crack, and eventually become more vulnerable to leaks.

That is why hail damage is not always obvious from the ground. A roof may look fine from the driveway, but up close the shingles can show impact marks, granule loss, and bruising that should be documented.
