Hot off the research press - presented by at the 2026 Veterinary Behavior Symposium in Seattle this week!

CONCLUSIONS:
Preliminary results of our study indicate that Reconcile - the FDA reviewed veterinary formulation of fluoxetine may have advantages in treating behavior problems in dogs without food allergies over generic fluoxetine, particularly among dogs that have not demonstrated improvement on fluoxetine.

Ask your veterinarian about switching to Reconcile.

A recent study found that future behavior problems can be identified in puppies as young as 12 weeks of age, with fear often being the very first clinical sign.

Those of us who work with dogs every day probably aren't surprised. We see it all the time.

One of the hardest parts of my job is meeting a puppy in class who is clearly struggling and knowing that early intervention could make a tremendous difference in their future. We encourage families to continue their puppy's education and emotional development with us, but too often we never see them again after puppy class ends—or sometimes they drop out before the class is even completed.

Unfortunately, fear rarely improves simply because a puppy gets older. More often, it becomes more generalized, and eventually shows up as barking, lunging, avoidance, reactivity, or other behavior concerns that are much more difficult to address later.

The good news? Puppies are incredibly adaptable. When we identify concerns early and provide appropriate support, we have the opportunity to change the trajectory of that dog's life.

Puppy training isn't just about sit, down, and come. It's about building confidence, teaching coping skills, creating positive experiences, and helping puppies learn that the world is a safe place.

If your puppy seems fearful, worried, hesitant, or overwhelmed, don't wait to see if they "grow out of it." Reach out. Early support can make all the difference.

The goal isn't a perfectly obedient puppy. The goal is a resilient adult dog who can navigate the world with confidence.

One of the hardest parts of learning more about behavior is looking back at your own dog with new eyes.

Lately, I’ve been reading more about observation, ethology, body language, thresholds, and nervous system regulation. And honestly? It’s brought up a lot of grief for me.

There are behaviors I now recognize that I didn’t fully understand when Stout was younger. Not because I didn’t love him. Not because I didn’t try. But because I simply didn’t yet have the knowledge, language, or experience to see what I see now.

I think many of us imagine that once we “know better,” we would have done everything perfectly from the beginning. But real life doesn’t work that way. Dogs are complicated. Life is complicated. And behavior rarely comes with a clear instruction manual.

What I keep coming back to is this: understanding can come later and still matter.

I cannot change the early years. I cannot undo missed signals or moments of confusion. But I can continue learning. I can observe more carefully. I can respond differently now than I did then. I can create more safety, more understanding, and more compassion moving forward.

And maybe that’s part of loving a complex dog too — allowing yourself to grieve what you didn’t know while still recognizing how hard you were trying all along.

For anyone else carrying those feelings with their own dog, you’re not alone.
